The Lockheed PV-1 Ventura Bomber #49467 crashed in the Sierra Pelona Mountains on 2/24/44 during a snowstorm while on a test flight before delivery from the Lockheed plant in Burbank to Palmdale. All four of the crew on board were killed in this accident.

 A Cessna 210 N9460T crashed in the same canyon 27 years later on 5/30/71.

This is what I was looking for. Found the right place. The plaque was from the pilot's wife, it reads. "2/24/44 PV1 Ventura Bomber, test pilot George Gould Dory, The wings of God took up this flight, So long My Guy, Martha 5/27/44".

Zoomed in on the Palmdale Airport from the hill. The PV-1 was heading for it. Another 50' higher and they would have made it. The area was covered in fog at the time.
