August 31 and September 1, 2006
We spent two days at Mount Rainier National Park prior to leaving for our Alaskan Cruise. Day one was mostly spent driving around, exploring the Paradise and Sunset regions of the park. That afternoon, we hiked to the Mount Freemont Fire Lookout. We camped at the White River campground. The next morning, we hiked to First Burroughs Mountain, with great views of the Emmons Glacier. We had perfectly clear weather, which is rare around Mt. Rainier. It's not uncommon to be in many of the places where these pictures were taken from and not have a view of the mountain at all.
Mount Rainier, at 14,410 feet elevation, is Washinton's highest peak. It is also the 5th highest peak and the tallest volcanic mountain in the U.S. outside of Alaska.
