Kimberly > Lake Ohara is one of the most beautiful places on earth, and also one of the best spots to do some great day hikes. It was recommended to us by some friends to try the Alpine Circuit, a 12 km loop around the lake, all above treeline! We decided to go for it.

Kimberly > The hike begins with a step climb from the lake up to Wiwaxy Gap. So let me define "steep"...try climbing 3000 feet in one mile! It was tremendously steep and exhausting, but the views along the trail and at the top were spectacular and well worth the effort.

Kimberly > There were several points along the climb where we had to negotiate some rock formations that jutted out over the lake.

Kimberly > The morning was calm and mostly clear as we climbed, and we got our first taste of the scenery that was to come.

Kimberly > The trail starts out on the forested shorline, then climbs through scree slopes and some narrow ledges above treeline.

Kimberly > We finally reached Wiwaxy Gap, a saddle between Wiwaxy Peaks and Mt. Huber (seen here). It felt like a real accomplishment for us because we are so out of practice with alpine hiking.

Kimberly > This is a view back to the Wiwaxy Trail. We began at the lakeshore and ascended to the elevation of the saddle in the far upper right of the picture.
