Gloucester patrolman Chris Genovese, stands next to Mako, a Belgian Malmois, and his new partner. This pair creates the first K9 Unit of the Gloucester Police Department in its history. After typing out a seven-page report on his own, unpaid time, Genovese made a bid for the new canine addition, which will greatly improve the department's tracking and searching for illegal articles, such as illegal drugs. Genovese received the go-ahead from Chief Mike Lane and full support by Mayor Carolyn Kirk. "He's a thousand times better at smelling than humans," said Genovese on Thursday afternoon as he introduced Mako to Kirk. Currently, Mako is in a 14 week training academy, and will eventually be trained to track narcotics. Mako will only cost the police department $1 to $1.50 per hour, after start-up costs. A deal deal for the department, said Lane.
