"YELLOW JACKET"

"Simplicity, good taste, and grooming are the three fundamentals of good dressing and these do not cost money." ~ Author Unknown

It's Super Bowl Sunday and my guys are pulling for the New York Giants!!

Don Meyers, one of the founders of the Fiesta Bowl, came up with the idea of the yellow jacket. My guys are football fans, so I found this museum and put it on the list of places to visit. Although it is quite small, it houses lots of information pertaining to football, particulary regarding the Fiesta Bowl. The Ellie and Michael Ziegler Fiesta Bowl Center and Museum opened in Scottsdale in October 2006. Ellie and Michael Ziegler are longtime civic leaders and philanthropists. They have been Fiesta Bowl volunteers for many years.

Be blessed and share the rest.

"Some men see things as they are and say "Why?", I dream things that never were and say "Why not?" ~ Bobby Kennedy

The New York Giants are the Super Bowl champs (score of 21 - 17) as of last night; what a close game!! My guys were pulling for the Giants.......gotta support our Eli Manning!!!

"The Scottsdale Waterfront is a 1.1 million-square-foot project located in downtown Scottsdale. It includes retail, office, restaurant and high-rise residential buildings. Retailers include Urban Outfitters, Sur la Table, High Point and Priscilla of Boston. The restaurants include Zoës Kitchen, P.F. Chang's, Culinary Dropout, Olive & Ivy, Wildfish and Sauce. The development is also home to the Fiesta Bowl headquarters and museum. Enjoy the surrounding paths, landscaping, and a pedestrian-only bridge linking the canal to Southbridge and the Scottsdale Fifth Avenue Shopping district. In addition, Scottsdale Fashion Square is located directly across from the Waterfront." ~ Reprinted text from here: http://www.scottsdalecvb.com/listings/index.cfm?action=display&listingID=41743

"GILDED FEATHER" by Larry Kirkland

"If you keep your feathers well oiled, the water of criticism will run off as from a duck's back."
~ Ellen Henrietta Swallow Richards

SOOC comes this 20-foot-long gilded feather that's part of Larry Kirkland's "Imagination Gives Us Wings" exhibit. It is suspended below as if it has fallen from the bird's wing. In reality, the feather appears to be floating toward a granite inkwell inscribed with a line of poetry by Emily Dickinson: " So many possibilities; let imagination give us wings." It is made of marble, aluminum, and 23k gold leaf and was completed in 1994.

It's Monday but it doesn't have to be blue; make it golden day!

"WHY SHOULD I BE SAD?" by Melissa Martinez

"Weather is a great metaphor for life - sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, and there's nothing much you can do about it but carry an umbrella." ~ Terri Guillemets

This photo is SOOC although slightly off-centered, but I still like it and decided to share it with my SmugMug friends.

"A sculptural storm cloud, with dangling glassy raindrops and emerging light, gracefully hovers overhead. The artist confesses that rainy, dark, gray days are amongst her least favorite. The presence of rain often means the absence of the sun from our sight. But she realizes that rain, especially precious in the desert, in conjunction with sunlight brings life. Her artwork engages reflection on rainy deluges - on feelings of overwhelming sadness, thunderous resonances, the provocative imaginings in the shapes and movements of clouds, and the possibilities of renewal."

Additionally, "The artist chose Coroplast and acrylic as the primary materials to carry forth her concept of a storm cloud. She thinks conceptual first and then turns to practicality. For this project she needed materials that were lightweight, white and clear, able to reflect light or be translucent, durable to the environment, and safe to passing pedestrians. Her research and brainstorming led to this evocative realization of her sculpture."

"PAINT IN HER FACE" by Bill Tonnesen

"Other people's opinion of you does not have to become your reality." ~ Les Brown

Thanks a million for your comments on yesterday's "Why Should I Be Sad" public art. SmugMuggers, you rock!!! I thoroughly enjoy perusing your outstanding photos; you never disappoint.

"Created by casting a mold over a local woman (look for her chipped pinky toenail on the left foot) and using high gloss enamel paint, the strenuous process resulted in a fully erect, life-sized plaster statue that greets guests upon arrival. As one of the first commissioned works to be brought into the space by owner Karl Kopp, this mysterious yet beautiful piece is a stunning addition to one of Arizona’s most famous spaces. A truly incredible process went into creating this piece, and when words fail, we turn to photos."

“WINFIELD SCOTT MEMORIAL" by George-Ann Tognoni

"Love and respect do not automatically accompany a position of leadership. They must be earned." ~ Author Unknown

Based upon a historic photo and completed in 2007, this sculpture depicts the founders of Scottsdale, Arizona. Winfield Scott stands alongside his retired Army mule “Old Maud” with his wife Helen seated sidesaddle. Chaplain Winfield Scott and his wife, Helen Louise Brown Scott, supported one another in a myriad of accomplishments during their eventful lives - traveling from New York to California before settling in Arizona. In 1894, Scottsdale was named in honor of the city's energetic founder. On October 31, 2008, George-Ann Tognoni, passed as peacefully as she lived her life, but her work will grace this world for generations to come. "THE YEARLINGS" (1985) by George-Ann Tognoni

"Horse sense is the thing a horse has which keeps it from betting on people." ~ W.C. Fields

Upon first sight, this sculpture reminded me of "The Mustangs of Los Colinas" in Irving, Texas.

"The Yearlings" greet visitors as they enter the Scottsdale Civic Center Plaza. This monument to wild horses has become an icon of free spirit in the American West and depicts three bronze yearlings galloping in full stride. On October 31, 2008, George-Ann Tognoni, passed as peacefully as she lived her life, but her work will grace this world for generations to come." ~ Reprinted text from her official website here: http://www.tognonisculpture.com/index.html

"SHADES OF THE WEST"

We found this little shop while walking the streets of Oldtown Scottsdale near the Scottsdale Civic Center Plaza / Mall. It is chock full of Southwestern theme gifts of all kinds.

Bischoff's "Shades of the West" was founded by Anselm Bischoff and has been in operation since 1971. Boasting an opulent history, the intersection's premiere corner was home to the Valley's very first arts and crafts center in the 1940s. Shades of the west has 38 years of history under its custom made belts, featuring a robust array of southwestern-flavored items from hats to kitchenware, gourmet spices to moccasins and regional books. ~ Reprinted text from www.shadesofthewest.com.

If you're ever in the area, stop by and tell'em I sent you:).

"SHADES OF THE WEST, TOO"

"A successful person is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks that others throw at him or her.
 ~ David Brinkley

Happy birthday to my oldest sister!

These works of art stand front and center in the courtyard of the little shop that was featured as yesterday's post. We found it while walking the streets of Oldtown Scottsdale near the Scottsdale Civic Center Mall. It is chock full of gifts of all kinds.

Thanks for your comments on yesterday's Shades of West" photo; it landed in the #1 spot for the day. My SmugMug friend, fotoeffects' photo was #2. With that said, I would like to mention that at one point, fotoeffects' photo was in the #1 spot while mine was in the #2 spot. When she commented on mine at some point, my photo landed in the #1 spot and hers in the #2, where each of them remained for the remainder of the day. Rarely does someone comment on a person's photo in the #2 spot while there's was in #1. For me, the POTD is not a competition; and decisions to comment or not are never based on who posted a photo.

The Lakers play Minnesota Timberwolves this evening; they have beaten the Timberwolves 15 straight times. Go Lakers!!

God is good all the time; have a blessed Sunday!

"DA BOOT"

"A lie travels around the world, while Truth is putting on her boots” ~ Charles H. Spurgeon

This single boot is a part of several public art pieces in a cluster called "Hidden Histories" that were created by Elizabeth Connor and installed in 2007. They sit under this shed in Oldtown Plaza in downtown Scottsdale at the intersection of Brown Avenue and 1st Street / between Scottsdale Road and Brown Avenue on 2nd Street.

Thanks for the comments on my "Camera Shy" post yesterday. No, I didn't purchase one of the siesta figurines; they are not quite my personal taste for interior/exterior home decor:).

Have a terrific Tuesday!
