"MECHANICAL- ACTION PIPE ORGAN"
"Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness." ~ Maya Angelou
Made by Michael Rathke, all interior and exterior mechanical and tone-producing portions are visible. Also, it has 183 pipes. Additionally, it is made of white oak, walnut, Douglas fir, poplar, ash, holly, and ebony woods, lead, tin, aluminum, brass, and iron.
According to its official website, "MIM offers a shared experience of the history of musical instruments throughout the world. The space is bright and open, providing guests with a warm and comfortable environment. Guests are given wireless headsets to wear throughout the museum. As they approach each display, they can hear the instruments being played, either solo or as an ensemble. Audio and video clips familiarize guests with the unique sounds of each musical culture, allowing them to share a common experience."
Additionally, "On the first floor, exhibits are organized by themes. The Orientation Gallery introduces guests to the astonishing variety of instruments, the ways music has been shaped by interaction and exchange, and the dazzling artistry of handcrafted instruments from around the world. On the second floor, instruments are organized by geography, across these five major regions of the world: Africa / Middle East, Asia / Oceania, Latin America and the Caribbean/, United States / Canada, and Europe."
