The second law prohibits any convicted sex offender from residing within one-quarter mile of schools, day care centers and playgrounds. > Legislative Majority Leader Jon Cooper joined Governor Eliot Spitzer, County Executive Steve Levy and other elected officials at a bill signing ceremony for legislation he co-sponsored that will change the process for redrawing legislative district lines in Suffolk County. What made this historic is that county legislators agreed to surrender their power to draw the districts in which they run for election. This landmark law, the first of its kind in New York State, will end the process commonly known as "gerrymandering," in which districts are oddly shaped to either exclude, or include, certain demographics and voting blocs. This important reform measure will empower voters and provide them with real choices on Election Day. The law will set up a non-partisan commission comprised of four retired judges, two minority community leaders and two voter rights/good government organizations to draft reapportionment plans in the future.

stewardship initiatives. Cooper was joined by other county legislators and leading environmentalists who expressed their support for his historic proposal.
