BirdLife protected areas paper
Cambridge, UK (March 21st, 2012) - New research led by BirdLife International, with over 40 scientists from almost 30 institutions, including Conservation International, has found that half of the world's most important sites for nature are currently unprotected. The researchers discovered this trend by analysing the overlap between protected areas and two worldwide networks of important sites for wildlife: Important Bird Areas (IBA), which comprise more than 10,000 globally significant sites for conserving birds, and Alliance for Zero Extinction (AZE)sites, which include 600 sites holding the last remaining population of highly threatened vertebrates and plants.
Thirteen amphibian species, such as this Eleutherodactylus, are found only in the Massif de la Hotte in Haiti, resulting in this area being highlighted as the highest global priority for urgent conservation action by the AZE.
