ktravers > The drive down to Liguria is a trip indeed! Coming into Liguria on the A7, we find that the hills require that the Autostrade take a route full of switchbacks- its quite the carnival ride! Karin ends up giggling for much of the ride, half from the thrill, half from fear.
The A12 along the coast is a feat of engineering- it seems to be more tunnel than open road (anyone want to take a stab on the real proportion of tunnels along this route?)
It takes us 3 ¼ hours (including the stop for food and going around in circles a bit out of Malpensa) for us to reach our hotel in Sestri Levante: The Grand Hotel Dei Castelli . Its well worth the trip!

ktravers > Beautiful, comfortable, serene, friendly, good food, the Castelli has it all! Small bathrooms, though, with the traditional wrap-around Italian shower curtain.

ktravers > Despite the name there is little in the way of grandness, ceremony or formality at the Grand Hotel, other than the property itself. Everyone is kind and friendly.

ktravers > The Castelli has A/C and TV in the rooms (though we used neither). We preferred the breezes and the view from the window. This place is delightful and fun!

ktravers > Equally enchanting was the view at night, blurrily recreated here.

ktravers > The Castelli grounds were something special- a fantastic mix of groomed gardens near the hotel proper, and wilder spaces throughout the rest of the peninsula on which it is located.

ktravers > Ali, the Moroccan porter, goes particularly out of his way to make sure we know how to get to some choice spots around the property, like the terrace with the fabulous views.

ktravers > Ali proves himself a whiz with our camera, insisting on shots from every vantage point.

The Castelli has A/C and TV in the rooms (though we used neither). We preferred the breezes and the view from the window. This place is delightful and fun!
