Kelly Slater and Balaram Stack (UnsOund Team) after Slater defeated Stack. Balaram just celebrated his 20th birthday yesterday and was quite excited to be competing against this legendary surfer.
Taken during a surfing contest in Long Beach, New York in September of 2008. Many of the waves were unusually large due to a hurricane out in the ocean. This surfer had just ridden up to the top of the wave and turned his body around...therefore he was actually standing on the back of the surfboard essentially going backwards! (This image, along with another one of mine, was featured in the 2010 Long Beach Calendar)
