Although I left the farm at eighteen to attend college and upon graduating to the big city to work, I will always in my heart be a farm boy. Nothing compares to living and working on a farm. My family worked hard and some years because of a drought, insect invasions and other calamities, we had little money to spend but we always had enough to eat. The image that people have had of rural areas is one largely fashioned by the residents of cities, who have seen the countryside as the often welcome antithesis of urban life. Rural life is no longer the predominant one in America, but its influence is still seen in city parks, suburban yards, and the recreational activities of urban people. Rural values provide stability against the rapid change of modern life. Rural America helps perpetuate the values that define America, like individualism and self-sufficiency; rural Americans are the Nation's backbone as the suppliers of food, and they represent the last open space in an environment with a rapidly developing suburban landscape.
