The story of the Spitler School Foundation begins in the Spring of 2005 when Danny and Pam Spitler visited Cambodia and had the pleasure of being guided by Mr. Chea Sarin.
dannypam > After getting to know Sarin, and learning about his desire to help the poverty stricken children in his community, the Spitler family donated enough funds to drill four small water wells which would provide clean drinking water to three villages and one school. Sarin took care of all the arrangements for the wells and refused any offer of compensation for himself.
dannypam > Sarin then asked Danny and Pam if they would consider helping him to build a school for a very poor village call Ang Chagn Chass. The village was too far from Siem Reap for the youngest of the village children to attend school. Sarin sent this photo showing where the school could be built.
dannypam > After exchanging many emails about the specifics of building and staffing a small school, the Spitler family decided to fund the project which would be a two-room classroom with two teachers and an estimated 60 students from Kindergarten through second grade.
dannypam > Within a month of receiving the funds Sarin had completed this very basic classroom and furnished it with tables for the students.
dannypam > Sarin hired two teachers and purchased school supplies with funds provided by the Spitler family, but instead of 60 students over 90 showed up for the first classes which were started in late summer before the official school year was to begin in September.
dannypam > Students continued to come throughout the summer of 2005, and it appeared that there could be as many as 200 children wanting to attend.
dannypam > Rather than turn children away Sarin and the Spitler family decided to build two more buildings making six classrooms and to hire a total of six teachers.
dannypam > All three buildings were completed during the late summer of 2005 and were ready to receive the students for the start of the official school year beginning in September 2005
