Friends, government officials, and D.C. area residents gathered at the National Cathedral September 14, 2007 to pay their final respects to Effi Slaughter Barry, former wife of ex-D.C. Mayor, Marion Barry. Effi Barry, age 63, was remembered by all as being a good friend and person, and for her community efforts. She lost her battle with leukemia September 6, 2007. Christopher refuted comparisons of his mother to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis that were made by many saying, "She was like a Nefertiti or a Cleopatra. She was like somebody who comes along every thousand years."
