Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > This seat is taken

(Feb. 29) No leaping aboard on leap day here.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Not sitting pretty

(Feb. 28) This Cooper's Hawk was just plain pissed. Some crows were harassing him, so he went after them shortly after I shot this. And he nailed each one on the head with his beak and talons. They couldn't outfly or outmanouver him, and he dogged and dive-bombed each one a couple of times. If you want an idea of scale, here's a shot of him in comparison to the crows (not ravens either) so you can see he's not very big:

Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Spiky hokey pokey

(Feb. 27) It's time to add to the spiky things series. This is how cacti do the wave - lean to the left, wave your spikes all about. The instigator is in the foreground.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > If bees could smile . . .

(Feb. 26) My baby apricot tree is in bloom and the bees are loving it. This is also improper use of a 300mm lens as a macro. But I don't have the latter and I do have the former, so it all works out.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Winter migration

(Feb. 25) More from the Palm Springs McCormick car auction. This was, um, a Packard(?) and it was, er, kinda yellow with some maroon. And it had a bird sitting on the hood, so I took a wildlife shot. If you want more details, you'll have to ask someone else.

Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Anticipation

(Feb. 24) It was a huge amount of effort on the part of auctioneers this weekend as the "old" economy expectations of the sellers met the current economy realism and risk-aversion of the buyers. A lot of reserves were not met. Yet each time a car entered the auction tent, the auctioneers manage to create the anticipation that this might be THE car that marks the turning point in the auction and the buyers' enthusiasm. I won't tell you how this car did, so you can experience the anticipation and expectation that was felt as it entered the auction tent.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > On the block

(Feb. 23) We went to see what a car auction was like in person. We almost bid on an old classic truck, but neither one of us tends to be impetuous with financial decisions, so it passed us by. We would have been easily outbid anyway by the collector that bought the truck in the end. That's our story and we're sticking to it.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > The urban-wildlife interface

(Feb. 22) Drawn for you in orange! I was trying to re-create a shot I saw in the paper, but found this grouping of waterfowl using the dredging pipes as a jungle gym.

I'll be out of town until Sunday. I'll catch up with the dp community then.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Hovercraft

(Feb. 21) I went to see the hummingbird nest today, but the mama hummer never showed. This gal did, and she was ready to take me on as well. (P.S. Take a look at the shutter speed on this one -- I forgot to check the ISO and it was in the shade. Gotta love image stabilizers!)
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > The dark side of the ivory tower

(Feb. 20) Hey, education's messy and takes lots of energy. This is the humanities building at UCR and, I think, the dean's tower.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Just hangin' out

(Feb. 19) This shot is from last Friday. No time to shoot today. I think it's the hummer with the nest, but at some point they either all look alike or individuals look different at different times.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Blue Bellied Gum Suckers (left and right variety)

(Feb. 18) These migrate through every few years or so and stay for a while. They are a silent predatory species, killing their prey by dropping out of the trees. They habituate potential prey species to their presence by staying very, very still. (Either that, or this is a rare Sneaker Tree.)

Today is Gus' "Gotchya Day." I've had him 2 years now. He must be around 8 or 9 years old. Here's my favorite photo of him out in the backyard squishing bugs:

Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > The Bike Majal

(Feb. 17) It's done! The rest of the yard looks like a tornado hit it and the crap behind it is the neighbor's, but the bike fort is the fanciest structure on the property. Jim said it was a "f-----ing lot of work to park a bike."
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > I'm ignoring you

(Feb. 16) The hawks are really tired of me around here. This is the only shot where this redtail isn't either looking away or giving me the stinkeye.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Ode to Spring

(Feb. 15) This wren was singing his little heart out in the Botanic Garden this afternoon. If you want to see how the hummer nest is doing, here's a shot of afternoon teatime at the crib:
