InOurTime > July 26, 2008 Daily Photo. Day 143.

House on Hamilton Avenue in Weehawken. It is steps from the site of the of Burr - Hamilton duel. As every schoolboy knows, Aaron Burr, then the Vice President, shot and mortally wounded Alexander Hamilton, former Secretary of the Treasury, (and Aide de Camp to Gen'l Washington during the Revolution) in a duel on July 11, 1804. Hamilton died the next day in Greenwich Village.

The house has a spectacular view of the Hudson River and midtown Manhattan, which I have posted as the runner up for today.

I could totally get into living here.
InOurTime > July 25, 2008. Day 142.

This is a view of Battery Park with the old pierhouse and the old Customs House (now a branch of the American Indian Museum and the Federal Bankruptcy Court) behind it. I used to work in the ugly building to the right with the rectangular windows. The curved building in the far right is a cool looking building on State street whose address I forget. Straight ahead to the left of center is 2 Broadway, a fairly ugly 60's monstrosity that looks pretty good in the late light I took this shot in. The older buildings to the left are old steamship company buildings, and I think the one on the far left is housing now.

I took the ferry from Pier 11 at Wall street intending to take some shots of the waterfalls that were set up on the river, but this shot just sort of grabbed me even though it is slightly blurry since I took it from a fast moving ferry that was jostling me around somewhat.

I will make a gallery of the Waterfalls shots, but for now I will post one in the runner's up gallery.

Happy Friday.
InOurTime > July 24, 2008. Day 141.

Back to work after 2 weeks off. I need the beach.

The Odeon in Tribeca. It's so 80's. lol.
InOurTime > July 23, 2008 Daily Photo. Day 140.

Jefferson Market Library, Greenwich Village, New York.

This was a police station and courthouse and then a jail at one time. The 6th Avenue El (1878 to 1938) used to run right past it (it would have blocked this view) until they tore it down.

I took a bunch of photos today so I created a Jefferson Market Library gallery.
InOurTime > July 22, 2008 Daily Photo. Day 139.

A double rarity in Hoboken. An empty, boarded up house and a parking space in front of it. Nothing to do with the subprime foreclosures. This has been this way for over 30 years, apparently because there are several family members who jointly own it and apparently can't agree what to do with it.

Unfortunately, I lack the skill to take a decent photo under the sunny conditions that prevailed. But, I don't always choose the photo because it's the best I shot that day, sometimes I just want to show something. I suppose if I was more disciplined, I'd go back another time and take it over. Which I've done on occasion.

On the bright side, so to speak, I've actually bought a book that might help me take better photos with the Nikon. My lack of knowledge about photography is appalling for someone who has spent at least 2 hours a day on it for the past 139 days.
InOurTime > July 21, Daily Photo. Day 138.

Summer in the city.
InOurTime > July 20, 2008 Daily Photo. Day 137.

Old Glory showing through a foggy morning over Fire Island and the Great South Bay, which is beyond the flag.

Fog at the ocean always reminds me of something Judge Cardozo wrote about a Court decision:

"Who shall know when masts and sails of rescue may emerge out of the fog?"

You don't want to know what kind of case it was.
InOurTime > July 19, 2008 Daily Photo. Day 137.

Fire Island deer. This one was part of a group having breakfast off the main walk through town.
InOurTime > July 18, 2008 Daily Photo. Day 134.

Dusk on Fire Island. A staircase to the beach is just beyond the top of the photo.

In answer to Gail's question, Fire Island is a 31 mile long and approximately 1/10th to 1/4 mile wide ( mostly, it's about 3 or 4 city blocks wide). There are about 12 "towns" spread out, some are as small as less than 50 houses, with no stores. Others are bigger with a grocery and several bars/restaurants. In between the towns is National Seashore. No cars are allowed (except for police, and utilities, generally), you have to walk everywhere, although some towns permit bicycles. You get there by taking a ferry to whatever town you are going to. The ferry takes about 20 minutes to 30 minutes, depending on the town. There are a few hundred year round residents. There is one state beach you can get to by car at the Western end and a couple of public docks/beaches if you have your own boat. You can also take a ferry to at least one of them as well. And all this is 90 minutes from Manhattan by railroad or car.

There are a lot of deer and tons of birds (see my bird nest photo) and also raccoons. I photographed a baby deer yesterday which I put in my Daily Photo Runner's up gallery.
InOurTime > July 17, 2008 Daily Photo. Day 134.

Fire Island Sunset over the Great South Bay.
InOurTime > July 16, 2008 Daily Photo. Day 133.

The Church At Point O' Woods. It is non-denominational. Point O' Woods was originally part of the Chautauqua Movement.

I took an approximately 5 mile walk through 3 towns, and along the beach and through the Sunken Forest through Point O' Woods, the most exclusive private community on Fire Island.

I created a gallery with the photos depicting the day's journey. There are interior shots in the gallery I created called "Fire Island Walk", which you can get to by going to my main page. There are also more photos of Point O' Woods and the Sunken Forest.
InOurTime > July 15, 2008 Daily Photo. Day 132.

Bird's nest up near the tarp covering an outdoor deck on the community center.

This is the best I could do and I cropped it obviously and did the auto fix for the color.

I don't know anything about birds except there sure are a lot of them out here and they fly away whenever I try to take their photos. These guys are too young to fly.
InOurTime > Bastille Day Daily Photo. Day 131.

The beach at Fire Island.

A hurricane somewhere near Bermuda caused rough seas yesterday and today and it was overcast most of today as well. Not a beach day. I heard there were rip tides as well and that 3 people died on the Jersey shore from them Saturday night and yesterday. This shot pretty much sums up the atmosphere.

There was a French Tri Color flying yesterday and I thought I would take a photo of it today for Bastille Day, but alas, it was not out today. People put up their flags when they are at their houses, so no flag means they are not on the Island.
InOurTime > July 13 Daily Photo. Day 130.

Octagon House, Fire Island Pines.

I think it is way cool.

Nice assortment of flags too.
InOurTime > July 12, 2008 Daily Photo. Day 129.

A very whimsical and colorful entrance to a house on Fire Island.

Hard to get a good shot because the walkway is narrow. I am just full of excuses...
