365 self portraits. Can I actually do it? Inspired by many others, I decided to give my creativity a kick in the pants with a Daily Photo project. With life happening too fast, quite often I lose the spark that drives me to pick up the camera. Hopefully I can maintain not only this project, but the ability to develop more as a photographer. Ideally, the majority of these will be self-portraits to help me get over my image complex and to document the most important, memorable moments of each day.

My rules:
1. At least part of myself in each shot. Every 24 hours.
2. EXIF data pulls rank. I travel and can't always upload on a timely matter, but the timestamp is as the timestamp does...
3. Try to document the dominant activity/event of the day. This is a journal-type project for me, too.
4. Having help is OK. While I always set up the shot myself, occasionally the location requires having my husband or a friend hit the shutter for me, or just stand there so my camera isn't sitting in the middle of the street unprotected.

I got a new bike! I'm so happy with it because I haven't ridden a bicycle in 15 years (at least, maybe more like 25?) and it's been something I've been putting off. I had to re-learn everything but it's been pretty fun - mostly because I haven't fallen off yet. I did run into a wall once, however, and a lot of people had a good time watching me laugh my arse off.

We also went on a hike at Piney Run Park with Annie and Jimmy this afternoon, but I've been pretty scatterbrained lately and forgot my camera. The dogs had a wonderful time and the weather is perfect for being outdoors. Lately I've really been wanting to get off my butt and be outside.

If this weather holds out I am going to really enjoy biking around my lovely neighborhood. It's something I've put off much, much too long. When I get conditioned maybe going down for a cup of tea and a hummus sammich at the Bean Hollow in old Ellicott City isn't out of the question. ;)

Today I was shooting behind-the-scenes documentary photos for Cavegirl Productions as they put together their submission for the annual 48 Hour Film Festival. Although it was a long day for me, it was much longer for them. This was me shooting part of the group going over the script over breakfast at Seth's.

I got more long days ahead as I need to process all of those shots. But they had an honest-to-god one-eyed pirate....

I miss my mom. We have a lilac bush in our yard which blooms each spring and fills the entire area with its lovely scent. My mother loves the smell of lilac and it always reminds me of her. When I was growing up we had a huge lilac bush in our yard and to me the smell of these fresh purple and white blooms is linked with the colorful hazy, lazy summer sunset.

We're so busy these days and I feel terrible that traveling only 3 states away is outside of our immediate grasp. I know we'll see my parents soon, but it's never soon enough.

To continue our slide into hippydom, today we (finally) started composting. Science! It works! So there's this, I am getting a new bike this weekend and I'll probably stop bathing sometime next week. :P

Trav and I are goofballs and love to be silly and laugh, which is how I get most of my facial exercise. Just over the weekend he had a slight mishap with a giant statue - though I admit I don't take credit for the photo idea. *coughLindacough*

I'm so tired this week, partially because I am getting hit by (another!) bout of sinusitis. Better now than later, I guess.

Outside of the Visionary Art Museum are a variety of interesting statues, many with interesting glass mosaics. The weather was kind of blah today, so black/white works for me!

This weekend our good friend Nick is visiting us in Charm City. We took him to the harbor (of course!) and walked to Fells Point and back. The weather is gorgeous and bright, and in between all the chaos and the aquarium we stopped for a beer at Slainte.

Whew! More tomorrow, I think. Hanging with photogs is suh-weet!

(Edit: Immediately after I took this shot I burst out laughing so hard and sprayed foam across the bar)

Today Trav got his custom felt delivered, which to him was better than Christmas! I have to say it does look beautiful and is perfect for his chips, for him, for who he is.

Poker is for him what photography is for me and I love that we have such different hobbies. He gets to see his buddies on a bi-weekly basis, however, whereas I have to bank my social dates for workshops and shootouts!

I don't really play poker, but we had to stage this shot.

I am what I eat. Salads are a huge (literally) part of my life and no one really seems to believe just how much lettuce I consume on a daily basis!

I'm surprised the grape tomato made it onto the top of this salad. The whole thing was gone not ten minutes after I took this shot.

Tangent: I have names that I give people in my building at work, people I don't actually know but see on a semi-regular basis. These are all in my head, of course: Lets Call Her Amy, Ducati Boy, herr Stamper, to name a few. These are things I've dubbed them due to any number of characteristics I observe about their behavior or appearance. But I always wonder what people are thinking about me, since I am very quiet unless I know you.

Sludge Girl?
Salad Freak?
Pony?

I skivved off for a bit and tried to go shopping. Since I wasn't really successful I spent some time taking self-portraits in some of the nicer dressing rooms, since I found my point-and-shoot in my bag.

Their furniture is nicer than the duds I have at home.

Continuing in the vein of "Lift Steph's Self Esteem Week," here is another one utlizing the best light I could find around the house. I was actually poking my head outside because it was such a lovely evening, and voila! Instant self-portrait.

It was also quite fun playing in the cocoon of a curtain.

Unfortunately I have too much work to do tonight to really enjoy it. Speaking of which, I did waste 15 minutes processing this shot so now I have to get back to the grindstone.

PS. I'm liking uploading to this daily photo project much more now that we have FiOS. :D

I was born tired of brown eyes. Brown, brown, brown, that's all I ever saw. My mother had brown eyes, my sister, my father, my aunts and uncles and cousins. Brown. Boring. Blah.

Ever since I left the nest, however, I have seen stunning eyes: blues, greens, greys, violet, hazel. Everyone had achingly bright gemstones in their face to captivate my attention. My husband's eyes are a combination of my favorite colors: I call them "dragon eyes," rimmed in arctic blue ice.

But suddenly I'm missing the brown. Apart from my family (and myself) I realize that I do not see brown eyes on a regular basis. Such a concept is so strange, but true. Brown is warm, comforting, and beautiful. Like molten chocolate. I love the brown.

As I have said repeatedly, I have been feeling extremely unphotogenic lately. I dislike feeling like this and today i was determined to do whatever it took, use whatever angle necessary to give me some confidence back.

I have two very large south-facing windows at home, covered in sheer white curtains. Perfect Rembrandt lighting, right? Maybe. It seemed to do the trick this time. I'm not even sure I look like me in this photo but I don't hate it!

Making banana apple pancakes this morning. Just as the shutter clicked, my husband was saying something to me that made me look up in surprise.

This was the weirdest tripod setup I have ever used. While the heat was not on under that burner, my 30D was propped inside a Le Creuset French oven and sitting on the lid of my blender. I wouldn't repeat the experience, though it looked funny.

Still not feeling very photogenic. And neither is the kitchen, because it looks a mess!

I finally got my 8-stop ND filter delivered in time for Scotland so I thought I'd test it out. This was a particularly well-timed idea: I have not been feeling particularly photogenic lately. I never do (hence the exercise of the 365 project) but I've been feeling like hiding and smudging myself, anyway.

I look very odd as a ghost! Maybe next time I'll try to set the camera more square to the wall so it doesn't look as though I'm falling downhill.

Today was a sit-in-traffic day, although the weather was gorgeous. It is my firm believe that because traffic is directly proportionate to the loveliness of the weather, people must only go to and from work when it's nice out. Since there is no point in getting irritated at cycle after cycle of red lights downtown, I thought it was more productive to take a bunch of snaps with my P&S.

The bottom photo was me making goofy pbbbtthtthhth!! noises. The middle is "What do we look like when one of those 'homeless' guys wants to wash our windshield?" The top is self-explanatory, with a little Harry Connick playing in the background.
