365 self portraits. Can I actually do it? Inspired by many others, I decided to give my creativity a kick in the pants with a Daily Photo project. With life happening too fast, quite often I lose the spark that drives me to pick up the camera. Hopefully I can maintain not only this project, but the ability to develop more as a photographer. Ideally, the majority of these will be self-portraits to help me get over my image complex and to document the most important, memorable moments of each day.

My rules:
1. At least part of myself in each shot. Every 24 hours.
2. EXIF data pulls rank. I travel and can't always upload on a timely matter, but the timestamp is as the timestamp does...
3. Try to document the dominant activity/event of the day. This is a journal-type project for me, too.
4. Having help is OK. While I always set up the shot myself, occasionally the location requires having someone else hit the shutter for me.

Since MyKey brought it up in a comment to my last photo, I actually did get a shot of the men's urinal. ;)

Ian initially, um, "strongly suggested" that I go in there for photos. So I did. Twice. And got caught with Ivar (though I suspect that they're used to that). Was it worth the shot? :D

I have 4 Daily Photos for this one day, but I'm making up for lost time I guess.

We spent a night in the famous Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo. What a great town! I loved it more than I expected to. The tackines is, of course, way over the top but it is just so much fun. Don't fight it! We had dinner downtown, drove out to Morro Rock just in time to see the hill disappear into the night, and then enjoyed drinks at the Silver Bar.

I actually miss the place now.

Ivar had the Starlite room, but I was in Floral Fantasy. Both rooms look much better than the old photos, actually.

At this point I have a thing going with hotel mirrors.

(I miss my room! Pink grows on you... even though it messes up your WB.)

We had to stop in Las Vegas, of course! However, Vegas hates us. We were unable to find the Strip, believe it or not, and we had trouble finding any parking. Plus we were getting hungry and that wasn't helping. We did find the old strip, however, which was a first for me. I haven't seen it or any photos since, uh, 1987 so I had no idea that it had been "remodeled" with that TV ceiling.

This show was being recorded/played live and we are actually on the screen. Pretty cool Daily, even though it is my backside. Cheat sheet here.

Today we explored San Francisco. We met with Anya who took a break from her brand-new baby girl to give us a brief walking tour of Russian Hill. The weather was mediocre - cool but overcast with awful light. I'm sorry that Ivar's first views of SF are with such gray light but I'm always happy to be here with friends.

Everyone had to crowd around this lovely Porsche... even non-car people.

We're in the hubcap. And the fender.

I got about 4 hours sleep, and you can tell in this photo. Sorry I have been so awful about keeping up with Dailies. I have taken a few but hated them all. Today was our first day of our trip and it was spent at Smuggy HQ, unexpectedly. I mean, we expected to drop by but never expected to spend almost all day there.

It culminated with a thrilling climb after midnight up a tower near a herd of wild raccoons and seeing a stunning (but ruined) view of the Bay Bridge. Darned fog. Ah, it was good. So are night tours of the city!

One of my favorite expressions is: "Why is it that when you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail?"

I suffer from this lately. Now that I have my flash and ways to get it off-camera, I can't resist playing every time I get the chance.

I admit I cheated and this shot was actually taken by Trav, but nothing I did myself turned out remotely passable. The face is inexplicable, one of our private jokes of the day. You really had to be there, I guess.

This is so much fun. If only had 6 arms to hold stuff!

(3 days and counting until I leave for CA and I get to do some road tripping with one of my best friends! I can't believe time flies so quickly.)

I received this very amusing hoodie today in the mail from a friend in LA. Although I do feel about 13 years old when I put it on, it never fails to make me snicker when I catch my reflection. And the potential lewdness of the design is, to me, very much worth that laugh.

Thanks, Leigh Ann!

(Where did my bluetooth headset go?)

Anyone who knows me knows how much I dislike being on the phone. I'm better than I used to be but I'll never be one of those people who shops, eats lunch, drives, works out, etc while yapping away on the thing. I have spent almost all evening on my phone, but it's all good even if my ear is warm.

I admit that because I had so many things I intended to do on my day off that didn't get done, I'm glad I at least took 5 seconds today to get my Daily. For this shot I even killed two birds and figured out how to use my new ST-E2.

Now it's back to reading, writing, homework... No rest this side of heaven.

I title my dailies with the numerical date that corresponds with the number of days I've been doing this project. Today is 194, and that's a very high number, actually, considering. However it would be really rich for me to actually say that I've done 194 self-portraits because that's not true. After all, I was poked today for not keeping up with them (which is a good thing) so here it is. ;)

I received an amazing shower of gifts today, the crowning item that was finally my very own 24mm TS lens. I had to include it somehow, although I'm really running on empty when it comes to creativity. I have all of these ideas but nothing comes out. Also, I am having zero luck getting the screws out to modify this lens myself. Out of a new (new) tool kit of screwdrivers, nothing is working. I'm not really sure what I can do because I have only 7 days before I leave for the shootout.

Anyway, for this shot I kept my scarf on because I realized that I was dressed like the lens. From the very beginning I've always loved the black/white/red color scheme. Consider it a niche.

My awesome husband is 30 today. I have never met a more selfless person in my life and I one extremely lucky woman.

Today I was playing with my flash (finally!) and some Pocket Wizards that a good friend lent me.

Time for dinner, scotch, and friends...

Today was an adventure. We somehow ended up at one of the big cemetaries in New Orleans, though not the one I'd expected to see. Maybe this was a good thing because we were the only ones there. After a full day of work all of the gates were closed and locked, but we asked some groundskeepers if they could let us in and they just waved us through the yellow caution tape. Uh, ok!

We had a great evening afterwards in the Garden District and our cab driver home was the American reincarnation of John, one of our guides in Scotland.

Then we had drinks at a jazz bar in the Quarter. Tomorrow we leave, and the only part of me that is grateful is the part that knows at home I can eat normally again and lose all the weight I put on this week! I also miss Zachary.

This is just a shot I snagged from Trav because it made me laugh. This was actually taken (by him) on Saturday while we were standing by the Mississippi River. The wind was quite fierce, no doubt remnants of the hurricane and I couldn't shoot for seeing.

You can even see that obnoxious paddleboat in the background.
schmoo > September 14, 2008

In the vein of Amsterdam, today's SP was keeping our overseas friends in mind. This IR shot was taken - again - in Jackson Square. The sun actually came out a lot today and while it meant it was slightly less humid than it was yesterday, it felt about 100 times hotter.

OTOH I almost have gotten used to it. Not that I enjoy being this hot and stifled, but I whine about it a lot less.

I just bought an awesome pair of boots from some gutterpunks for $5. They had the cutest puppies wrestling on the sidewalk, too, which I just considered a bonus.

I figured out that the "weird noise" I was hearing all yesterday afternoon was the paddle boat whistling and wheezing and, well, being cacophonous.

And Trav and I actually ate cookies in bed today. (And neither of us kicked the other one out!) The day is totally not even over.
schmoo > September 13, 2008

We are down in N'Awlins this week. I have not been here in about 10 years, and my trip back then was so brief it barely counts. Old boyfriend, head problems, stress, sick with a fever, it was just a bad scene.

On the other hand, Trav has a history with this place that I never got to see. I don't know why it took us almost a decade to find out way down here to the city he loves, but it did. It means so much to me to finally be able to experience the city that is so important to him, with him.

Today we had an early start in the Vieux Carre. At 10:30 AM on a Saturday, there are few artists in Jackson Square. Enough room for him to point out to me the boundaries on the stones that he and Dave use to set for their performance space.

We always say that it's a miracle that we never used to run into each other, floating in the social circles that we did before we met. And sometimes I look at who we are and think that the miracle really lies in how different we have become compared to who we were, and how similar we are to each other now.
