365 self portraits. Can I actually do it? Inspired by many others, I decided to give my creativity a kick in the pants with a Daily Photo project. With life happening too fast, quite often I lose the spark that drives me to pick up the camera. Hopefully I can maintain not only this project, but the ability to develop more as a photographer. Ideally, the majority of these will be self-portraits to help me get over my image complex and to document the most important, memorable moments of each day.

My rules:
1. At least part of myself in each shot. Every 24 hours.
2. EXIF data pulls rank. I travel and can't always upload on a timely matter, but the timestamp is as the timestamp does...
3. Try to document the dominant activity/event of the day. This is a journal-type project for me, too.
4. Having help is OK. While I always set up the shot myself, occasionally the location requires having someone else hit the shutter for me.

New mouse pad arrived today.
schmoo > July 16, 2008

I had a great day off. It's strange to me to have a "weekend" day in the middle of the week, but I'm finding that I like how it breaks up the string of work days to smaller chunks. It started with lunch with Kerry at a fabulous, amazing, delicious vegetarian restaurant. Organic hippie food cooked lovingly and perfectly, with a side of vacation reminiscing and photo geekery. I took a shot of the pumpkin pie we had as a dessert, but it wasn't stunning enough for a Daily. Really, their website sucks but the place makes my Top 10 best places to eat!

I got stuck in that truly legendary NoVA traffic on the way home, but when I got back my sister came by for a surprise visit. We went out to dinner at a local haunt that's not fancy but still very good, and here I tried the "knife trick." Originally dubbed by Diane Brill in her book, Boobs, Boys and High Heels, I altered it slightly (with a touch of Sebastian) for today's shot. Not sure it worked but I was smiling in that reflection. The focus is a bit off, but, it was a fun experiment.

(Do we really look alike?)

Hmm.

I would like some cheese with my whine.

The last several days have been really rough - getting more and more acquainted with the new job and simultaneously writing a major research paper for my class. It's been such an interesting mental challenge juggling my education and my work, which couldn't be two more different fields!

The ripples of my ocean are slowly settling into a more familiar cadence but it doesn't make me fear the water any less. I realized today that I came from being in a big boat floating in a big sea, to being in a small boat in an even bigger sea. The strangest (to me) thing about this analogy is the fact that in this much smaller vessel I really can feel the nuances of the tide and the waves. These things were so much more efficiently insulated before.

I feel kind of small these days, so I had to use my widest lens.

I lusted for the rust, so I ran away for the day. I dropped everything and ran for the hills - to coal country, that is. An old abandoned steel mill has been calling my name for over a year, and it was high time I paid her a visit with my camera.

The day was hot and I was determined to not worry about any other obligations while I was out. Self portraits are really awful and crushing for your self-esteem on a day that's sweltering with heat and humidity, but this one came by unexpectedly. I can see myself in Matt's lens, even if no one else knows exactly what they're looking at.

Matt is always good fun and chock full o' historical knowledge and weird stories. And ladies, he IS available!

A bit of a cheat: You are what you eat. Right? Well, then it's good enough to represent my mug on this day.

This is my idea of a delicious breakfast 7 days of the week. What's funny is that I have had a ton of people asking me what goes into my smoothie and an equal number of people asking how to make one themselves. I always tell them that no matter how many "yucky" green veggies you throw in there, a few raspberries or blueberries will mask the color and make it tasty. Which is really only truth for anyone but me - I find the green more palatable and aesthetically pleasing, myself.

I really don't listen to my own advice, but oh well. I do get a really big kick out of people wrinkling their nose at my green sludge. It always means more for me.

PS. I love this pint glass that I picked up on a most unique brew pub in Pittsburgh, PA. Mediocre beer and the food was even worse, but I can't pass up going to a brewery that is converted from an abandoned church - and is attached to an old school that is still abandoned. :D

The juxtaposition of the Scottish shells that I discovered in my raincoat pocket and the Hummer that parked itself behind my car tonight as I stared at them was... just perfect.

Photographers should (and have) smacked me, but until today I didn't have any kind of lighting of my own. Today the 580EXII I ordered last week arrived, though the mailman didn't warn me about it and I found the poor little box baking on my porch when I went out to check the mail.

I don't get deliveries from B&H very often and it's always kind of a mixed emotion. However you gotta hug your box when it arrives, or the magical glow won't come out of it. Hugging boxes is kind of uncomfortable, though. I'd rather hug people.

And this was the second time I used the Gorillapod. Hanging your camera on the top of a door really is a test of faith!

Still seeking...
schmoo > July 3, 2008

I have started working from home and I have never been busier in my life. Since I'm here all day, I don't see my house anymore. Kind of funny, actually. I also feel as though I see my husband less. In a way this makes sense: before we shared a commute and although I never realized it until it was too late, that 30-45 minutes in the car with him twice a day was when we did a lot of our interaction. These days I am working before he leaves in the morning and still working when he gets home in the evening. I feel like my back is always to him.

We had dinner at one of of my favorite places this evening because he's going to be out of town for the holiday weekend. I had this idea of doing a serious, symbolic, morose portrait of us not looking at each other and not smiling, but each time we somehow ended laughing our butts off when the shutter clicked.

I guess you just can't force some things!

My new MacBook Pro finally arrived! I unwrapped it with(out) Zachary's help. I'm not so much excited to receive it as I am reluctant to have to set up and configure yet another machine. I do appreciate the new toy, though, even though this seals my fate as being able to work from virtually anywhere in the world!

Me (unwrapping it): It smells like Silicon Valley!
Trav: That's funny. It probably was never anywhere near there.
Me: Well, it sounds a lot better than "It smells like China!"

I do have a lot of sentimental feelings for my old G4 Powerbook, which I am now retiring. It's covered in great stickers and has been with me across the world. From Ireland to Germany to Japan to Scotland and the Netherlands, it's been toasting my lap and making me grumble about how slow it is for years. I learned to play WoW on that thing, and graduated to a real cinema display into the desktop work on it. I will miss it so much. :(

Road trip up the coast with Andy, Ian and Nick! What a great day. I forced myself to not work this morning and instead caught up with school, then we had a leisurely scenic drive up the Pacific in Andy's convertible. It was great, even though I got a little sun/wind burn on my face.

We threaded our way through golden hills and twisty, misty mountain roads, colorful little towns with great coffee shops and dappled redwood forests. The forests smelled so good, I just closed my eyes and inhaled the earthy rush. Looking up through the canyon of dark green reminded me of being a kid again, lying down in the back of my parents' car and watching the treetops fly by.

This shot was taken in the old lighthouse at Point Reyes. I was running out of ideas for SPs but the chair in the corner was perfectly lit. Ian shot me shooting myself, and I didn't know until afterwards that Andy was stuck to the window. I had a really good laugh after the fact! Whatta freak. :D

This is another snapshot, but who has time these days to play with the actual camera? Oh, I guess Baldy does. And Nick. :)

My little anatomically-correct bendy lady came with me. I am trying to take shots of her (and my bendy guy to represent Trav) around but I just never really got to it. SpouseFail. :(

On this day we were superhero'd. Photos are coming, I think. The hazing is, fortunately, over.

Don't know what day it is anymore. It's Wednesday I think, if only because it's the day I had to cancel plans with Anya.

I appreciate Ian coming out and giving us a chance to walk down the street in a beautiful evening. I appreciate having the chance to take some photos, even though it was with my point and shoot. I appreciate being able to talk (over whisky) a bit about photography and Dgrin and shootouts and workshops just like a past life. And of course I appreciate Ian taking this photo so I didn't have to.

Wistful on the balcony at the hotel Zico at 9:30 PM. I'm too tired to really do anything, too tired to think. But I am not too tired to look at the lovely sunsets here and savor the sweet, dry, mild weather when I step outside four times a day.

Ian and April say the smoke from the fires makes them choke, but I don't smell anything at all. In fact, I think it's very nice. Must be the carcinogenic soup that passes for fresh air in Baltimore...

Regardless of the exhaustion, I love the work, the environment (although it gets a bit raucous at times, particularly when I'm making a business call) and everything else about it so far. I knew I would, but it was still a rough path to choose. Everyone is so helpful, knowledgeable, nutty, and kind. It's hard not to thank the deities for giving me a chance.
