365 self portraits. Can I actually do it? Inspired by many others, I decided to give my creativity a kick in the pants with a Daily Photo project. With life happening too fast, quite often I lose the spark that drives me to pick up the camera. Hopefully I can maintain not only this project, but the ability to develop more as a photographer. Ideally, the majority of these will be self-portraits to help me get over my image complex and to document the most important, memorable moments of each day.

My rules:
1. At least part of myself in each shot. Every 24 hours.
2. EXIF data pulls rank. I travel and can't always upload on a timely matter, but the timestamp is as the timestamp does...
3. Try to document the dominant activity/event of the day. This is a journal-type project for me, too.
4. Having help is OK. While I always set up the shot myself, occasionally the location requires having someone else hit the shutter for me.

Saturday evening at the movies. This is a record - so far this year I've actually physically been inside a movie theater three times. This is more than I have gone in the last 5 years, total.

Not quite as rare is the sight of the three of us friends hanging out. Good times, good times. And I got a huge kick out of (1) Matt pimpin' us on each arm but (2) the fact that on a whim I took out my camera, braced it on his knee and by sheer luck got the perfect SP of the day in the first and only shot.

Mmppht.

That kind of day.

After a two year hiatus (maybe more) I have started going back to Xpose. I hate the gym, hate a regular routine of working out because it gets so boring, but stripperobics is so much more interesting than any other gym.

I think the website is amusing in that they claim to revive "the lost art of exotic dance." The phrase conjures up images of Aztec warriors in terrifying masks gyrating around.... pyramids?

I'm far from good and have never been graceful. But it's fun, so much fun and I love seeing women of all shapes, ages, and sizes getting down and dirty with their chairs. Walking in the front door, the instructors are just ordinary people. But once they are on stage they are transformed into goddesses, flexible divas full of catlike grace and slinky confidence.

Not that I have hopes of ever looking that good, but it is inspiring and as I said, fun.

Whether or not this gunk does anything useful I love this mud mask by Lush. It's soothing and smells nice and is made with fresh blueberries and Irish moss. I really do feel/smell like a forest dryad when I schmear it on my mug.

... even if I look like the creature from the black lagoon while I do. :D

I've always had difficulty shooting in public. Not performance anxiety, but law enforcement always tries to give me trouble. I think I have a pretty innocent face so this always surprises me, particularly because I get the most harassment when I'm trying to shoot major monuments like the skyline from Federal Hill, the waterfront at Canton, or the Smithsonian Institute in DC.

Somehow we managed to find a little peace in Mt. Vernon. It was a warm and humid night, but it was nice to get out and feel the weight of my camera again.

Testing a new (to me) product, I got a custom SkinIt for my iPod. I like the idea of being able to customize my gear with my photos, even though the process of choosing makes me really hate my photography and everything I shoot! On a whim I picked two photos from Scotland, even though it really makes no sense to stick landscapes on an iPod.

Here are my product shots to show my coworkers. I missed a little on the back piece as you can tell, but after 10 tries I just couldn't be buggered anymore.

You can see the front here.

New mouse pad arrived today.

I had a great day off. It's strange to me to have a "weekend" day in the middle of the week, but I'm finding that I like how it breaks up the string of work days to smaller chunks. It started with lunch with Kerry at a fabulous, amazing, delicious vegetarian restaurant. Organic hippie food cooked lovingly and perfectly, with a side of vacation reminiscing and photo geekery. I took a shot of the pumpkin pie we had as a dessert, but it wasn't stunning enough for a Daily. Really, their website sucks but the place makes my Top 10 best places to eat!

I got stuck in that truly legendary NoVA traffic on the way home, but when I got back my sister came by for a surprise visit. We went out to dinner at a local haunt that's not fancy but still very good, and here I tried the "knife trick." Originally dubbed by Diane Brill in her book, Boobs, Boys and High Heels, I altered it slightly (with a touch of Sebastian) for today's shot. Not sure it worked but I was smiling in that reflection. The focus is a bit off, but, it was a fun experiment.

(Do we really look alike?)

Hmm.

I would like some cheese with my whine.

The last several days have been really rough - getting more and more acquainted with the new job and simultaneously writing a major research paper for my class. It's been such an interesting mental challenge juggling my education and my work, which couldn't be two more different fields!

The ripples of my ocean are slowly settling into a more familiar cadence but it doesn't make me fear the water any less. I realized today that I came from being in a big boat floating in a big sea, to being in a small boat in an even bigger sea. The strangest (to me) thing about this analogy is the fact that in this much smaller vessel I really can feel the nuances of the tide and the waves. These things were so much more efficiently insulated before.

I feel kind of small these days, so I had to use my widest lens.

I lusted for the rust, so I ran away for the day. I dropped everything and ran for the hills - to coal country, that is. An old abandoned steel mill has been calling my name for over a year, and it was high time I paid her a visit with my camera.

The day was hot and I was determined to not worry about any other obligations while I was out. Self portraits are really awful and crushing for your self-esteem on a day that's sweltering with heat and humidity, but this one came by unexpectedly. I can see myself in Matt's lens, even if no one else knows exactly what they're looking at.

Matt is always good fun and chock full o' historical knowledge and weird stories. And ladies, he IS available!

A bit of a cheat: You are what you eat. Right? Well, then it's good enough to represent my mug on this day.

This is my idea of a delicious breakfast 7 days of the week. What's funny is that I have had a ton of people asking me what goes into my smoothie and an equal number of people asking how to make one themselves. I always tell them that no matter how many "yucky" green veggies you throw in there, a few raspberries or blueberries will mask the color and make it tasty. Which is really only truth for anyone but me - I find the green more palatable and aesthetically pleasing, myself.

I really don't listen to my own advice, but oh well. I do get a really big kick out of people wrinkling their nose at my green sludge. It always means more for me.

PS. I love this pint glass that I picked up on a most unique brew pub in Pittsburgh, PA. Mediocre beer and the food was even worse, but I can't pass up going to a brewery that is converted from an abandoned church - and is attached to an old school that is still abandoned. :D

The juxtaposition of the Scottish shells that I discovered in my raincoat pocket and the Hummer that parked itself behind my car tonight as I stared at them was... just perfect.

Photographers should (and have) smacked me, but until today I didn't have any kind of lighting of my own. Today the 580EXII I ordered last week arrived, though the mailman didn't warn me about it and I found the poor little box baking on my porch when I went out to check the mail.

I don't get deliveries from B&H very often and it's always kind of a mixed emotion. However you gotta hug your box when it arrives, or the magical glow won't come out of it. Hugging boxes is kind of uncomfortable, though. I'd rather hug people.

And this was the second time I used the Gorillapod. Hanging your camera on the top of a door really is a test of faith!
