365 self portraits. Can I actually do it? Inspired by many others, I decided to give my creativity a kick in the pants with a Daily Photo project. With life happening too fast, quite often I lose the spark that drives me to pick up the camera. Hopefully I can maintain not only this project, but the ability to develop more as a photographer. Ideally, the majority of these will be self-portraits to help me get over my image complex and to document the most important, memorable moments of each day.

My rules:
1. At least part of myself in each shot. Every 24 hours.
2. EXIF data pulls rank. I travel and can't always upload on a timely matter, but the timestamp is as the timestamp does...
3. Try to document the dominant activity/event of the day. This is a journal-type project for me, too.
4. Having help is OK. While I always set up the shot myself, occasionally the location requires having someone else hit the shutter for me.

Since I was, um, teased about the fact that I purchased two dresses recently instead of upgrading the RAM on my desktop, I figured it was a good time to wear one of the girly offenders.

Trav and I have somehow ended up making it a regular thing to go for brunch on the weekend at a local veg*n haunt -- along with every other vegetarian/vegan hippie in the area. Our dining choices here are fairly limited so any place that has excellent vegan pancakes and tofu scramblers is a real treat.

Anyway, I decided to dress up today. And for the record I know that we have finally turned into "those darned hippies," too, so of course I mean no offense by that term. ;)

Today was spent running some errands. The day is beautiful (CA weather!) so we went to Home Depot to pick up repotting supplies for my plants.

With this cone-shaped moss thingy I just want to grow a long beard, travel the world and say "Cheerio!"

Right now I think I am going to go and bake some banana nut muffins and get to that repotting... (but not at the same time)

Too busy to be artsy today. I thought it was high time I showed the world what a sad little freak my puppy is.

Just like me, he is crazy about crunchy green vegetables. Dog food is alright, but veggies are totally where it's at for him. When he hears me get the week's greens out for chopping he comes running and sits there silently while I chop-chop-chop until I'm done. I admit that I spoil him and he gets a small share of the goods, too.

Then he runs into his little den carrying his loot (cucumber, celery, or romaine... his favorites, just like mine) and I can hear him happily crunching away.

I feel like I'm holding stars in my hands, even though it was cold enough to sleet as I took this photo and my fingers were completely numb with cold.

One thing I do take for granted here is that we have definite seasons. Although it is April and advertisements for grills are already hitting the airwaves, it's bloody-ass cold outside. Normally the birds are singing their beaks off, we grumble about rain and mud and get excited when the first robin is spotted amongst the tiny crocuses.

Forsythia plants have been a quiet staple to my life. For some reason, my childhood is inextricably linked with this bright yellow bush. My mother always loved this plant even though I thought it was a little bit too bold for your average garden: often unkempt and unruly, forsythia is difficult to tame. When I was in kindergarten one of our spring art projects involved taking slender sticks and gluing twists of yellow tissue paper to them. Instant forsythia, as if there weren't enough in the yard right outside.

In a way I'm glad we have this one rogue bush in our yard right now. Even though it is an eyesore the other 11 months of the year.

... because I just might want to shoot panoramas this spring. :D

It may be April Fool's Day but it's back to homework for me. I was away all weekend so I got very little of this week's assignment done. Somehow I think I managed to throw something together in time.

It is particularly difficult for me to keep up with the Daily Photo project because all of my time outside of my regular day job is devoted to reading, studying, or general home life affairs.

I plead the fifth on my reviews of this textbook: Financial Statement Analysis and Security Validation.

This evening we met with Cal, Dan and Ken for the night tour of Alcatraz Island. It was awesome! I am not particularly pleased with my shots but due to our impressive collection of gear, tenacity and sweet smiles someone (probably April?) talked the guard into giving us a private after-hours tour of the basement dungeons.

We were required to put on these GGNP hard hats because it's kind of, um, rustic down there, but it was a real treat.

I hate my goofy smile, but excuse the wrinkles. My face is all sorts of contorted in this shot because of my short arms and the length of that lens.

Missing days, I know. I'll get to them later, if I have them. This shot is cheating since I didn't take it myself, but it's funny so it flies.

Today a friend (a DC transplant to SF) took us to Pixar Animation Studios where he works and gave us a private tour. It was awesome! I've never seen such a great work environment before or such a pretty and effective workspace. The food was excellent, too.

This is us being goofballs in the front entrance. Of course, after our tour we had to rush and catch our flight home, which was about as uneventful as it can be.

Thanks, Moose!

I missed yesterday, but this is because I loaded my CF card for today into my friend Shizam's computer and it somehow deleted a few files that I had not had a chance to download onto my laptop. Party foul!

I am currently on the left coast, fully enjoying my time here, as usual, and wondering why I had the misfortune to have been born and bred in the east. I have never felt so "home" as I do when I am out here. Friends make all the difference. I have had an extreme whirlwind of a day, loaded with good food, excellent libations (OMG), and friendship that I never believed possible. I am flabbergasted by the generosity and awesomeness of people who, just a year ago, I never knew existed. So much can change in a year. So much will change.

Today didn't exactly go as planned, but I don't really care. I got to see some of my favorite people on Earth and maybe even took some photos worth sharing. I am enjoying the Mediterranean weather and sampling the unique flavors of the Bay Area.

Lots of stuff going on. And I chose to use this photo today because no matter where I travel in the world, I always promise to take photos of things that are "Ivarish" for my friend Ivar... and although many things are close, none come quite as perfect as an actual photo of him. :D

Today was a turbulent day. After work I lay on the couch with a pillow over my head but decided that wasn't doing anything useful. Instead my husband took me to dinner at a quirky new (to us) place in Hampden. I had heard many good things about this place and it had quite a lot of personality, that's for sure. The menu was also very enticing -- until you realize just how much they emphasize NO SUBSTITUTIONS. Period.

That policy just doesn't fly with me anymore. I shut my yap and ordered a salad that ended up being topped with food so far off of the "OK" list that I now I feel like I'm gonna hurl.

So now, 4 hours later I'm ready to be back in this position, only this time wearing flannel pajimjams instead of a tweed skirt.

All in all it was a good day, although I doubt my little blurb here made it sound that way. I have awesome friends and family who make me feel important, loved, and just plain ol' good inside.

(Fried tofu? not so much)

Today I actually went clothes shopping. The older I get, the more girly I become. Now I listen to bands like Venus Hum and shop at Anthropologie. Paisley excites me and I want flowers exploded across my chest. Help!

(I did buy this little black dress. It is awesome.)

Here, kids, is a case of the gods smiling down on me. No crop, no lights, no cloning, just haphazard "studio" setup in an empty room with a little evening sunlight coming in. I was prepared to agonize for an hour, and instead it took about ten minutes.

Today I got to thinking about how disproportionate my life has become. I have many new friends who I care about beyond description, but at the same time I feel somewhat isolated. On a daily (weekly) basis my human-human interaction is very low. Although I see most people I know online, it's not quite the same. You know how it is.

This might not be apparent to anyone else, but my portrait to day is my tribute to my friends, the ones I used to see all the time and laugh with in the little glass corner. I hope that those days aren't really over. Today I dug out my "sex jacket" (coined lovingly by Jamie), gothed up my hair and silenced myself for the shot.

It's been one of those days where every waking moment was occupied by something. Somehow I knew I wouldn't be able to really think much about photography, so it was a P&S day. Better a snap than to skip a day... I think?

The highlight of my day was not necessarily taking Zach out for his evening walk, but it was the only time I had the semblence of mind to set the camera up with the timer.

(He is a very important part of my life, though. I mean the dog, not the P&S.)

Today we celebrated my great-great aunt's 104th birthday. We took her out to a scenic park that overlooked some of the rolling farmlands outside of Frederick, MD. Not exactly where I would have chosen to go, but she was so thrilled for any celebration at all. She is an amazing woman, still active, still sharp... and she gives me inspiration for living a good, healthy, long life.

There was cake, fruit, and sparkling apple juice. And my knees got very cold in the wind.

Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag, tante Guste!

This afternoon we stopped by the Avenue in Hampden for a spell to pick up a few things. I love poking around and patronizing local businesses - nothing means more to me than getting good homegrown service and unique products. We didn't have lunch at Cafe Hon (too crowded) but the window was enticingly reflective.

My 'do got even shorter this morning. I'm loving it, and thankfully Trav does too. It might be a little bit boyish but I feel free as a bird. Tweet tweet!
