This gallery is a melange of my photographic styles as well as a look into my daily life. I try to capture something new every day or else to find something that fits the day. It's a great excuse to carry my camera with me more often than not, and it allows me to stop and take those pictures that need to be taken.

ALMOST an unwise decision.

This runner tried to steal second base, but had to return to first and barely made it. Beautiful Saturday morning for baseball today, and the visiting team came all the way from Hawaii to play in Texas. I'm sorry they beat us, but still hope they have a good and memorable trip.

This was my first time to shoot high school baseball. Like other sports, I've always just enjoyed hanging out and watching the crowd, enjoying the atmosphere . . . but the games really are more fun when you pay attention to the action.

Hubby came with me and whispered in my ear to help me learn how to anticipate plays. We make a pretty good team, him and me. I think I'll keep him.

Found by the side of the road on a recent excursion.

Well . . . shucky dern. The baseball game I wanted to shoot and post for today got rained out, so I had to resort to the "files" from earlier this month.

I'd love to come back here and shoot portraits. Wouldn't a little country wedding be pretty under this arch?

Tonight on Cable

Remember when getting cable for your television meant that you had really arrived? Suddenly the family went from three network stations and maybe a UHF channel if you were in a big city to a dozen or more. When we first got cable, we brought in the BEST weekday afternoon programs including Icky Twerp and Bozo the Clown, live from Dallas. SesameStreet was introduced about that time too. Of course, I was too old and worldly for it, but my little brothers LOVED it.

Rubber Ducky, you're the one! You make bathtime Loads of fun. Rubber Ducky I'm awfully fond of you!

My dad used to stay up late on Friday night watching bullfights from Mexico. He got so interested that he bought shelves of books so he could learn all about the fighting techniques and whole Spanish and Mexican culture. He studied the traditions, the religion, the art, the language, the food -- and this was all just for fun and personal enrichment. I can't remember when when TV last prompted any of us to buy and read tons of books aside from Oprah's Book Club.

The really cool thing about cable, though, was that once the companiesfinished stringing lines through every neighborhood in town -- and then from the poles to the paying subscribers' homes, they eventually emptied these big wooden spools. You could sometimes get them for free or for cheap. How many young men had cable reel coffee tablesin their first apartments? How many kids broke their legs riding cable reels down the street?

I used to dream of the day when you could push a button on your TV and actually SAVE Lassie and the Wonderful World of Disney until you were ready to watch them. Maybe I should claim that I invented the VCR. I probably thought of it first. Now would someone please explain to me what Blu Ray is and why is it better than my DVDs? What's going to happen to them?

Clutch, the Houston Rockets' Mascot and I got to play in the hospital this morning. What a riot! How wonderful that a fuzzy character can put such big smiles on so many faces. This guy and his handler are both awesome. They are accomplished entertainers, perceptive, creative, energetic and highly talented.

Celebrating the Year of the Rat.

Thanks to the US Postal Service for providing the artwork. Yes, I'm a little late to celebrate the Chinese New Year, but since I am a Rat, we'll celebrate all year.

Did you know that rats and monkeys do go well together? My DH is a Monkey.

Good thing.

Beauty fades, but love lingers long.

One final tulip. The petals are shattering, and made some lovely images so
Here's a link to the rest of my Valentines Tulip shots. I took some on Thursday and the rest today.

Another Tulip

Thank you to everyone for the positive comments on yesteday's tulips. I couldn't resist posting one more today.

Yesterday's was straight out of the camera with no editing or cropping at all. I was rather pleased. I played with it a little bit, but kept going back to the original. On this one, I adjusted the tones just a bit to get the deep rich colors rather than the soft dreamy effect that yesterday's image had.

And to answer a couple of the questions, yes it was taken with my Canon Macro 100 2.8 lens. I don't know why the camera info didn't show, but sometime I have issues with not getting all of the icons to pop up when I'm looking for info on people's photos as well.

And yes, Hillary. I am back into the 40D saddle. The one that is out for repairs is not back yet, but I went ahead and gutted up to replace the DReb. I've needed to do that anyway, so now at least I will have a quick and reliable backup and can soon shoot two different lenses without having to stop and remount in the field.

Shot these in my studio with straight window light. No flash. The black background is a pillowcase.

The front grills on Edsels and Studebakers always looked like mule harnesses to me. Perhaps the the designers were thinking about horsepower when they came up with them.
Here's some genuine horsepower for comparison. What do you think? http://spccreative.smugmug.com/gallery/4304250_ytrbX#252329834

Edsel handle -- original version. This one evokes sweet memories and perhaps a little melancholy for days gone by. Total different feel from the processed version. Which would you choose and why?

Edsel handle - processed
Processing images can do fun things and create totally different feelings, but it's hard to decide what I want to portray with various photos. For instance, I think this gives a macabre film noir feeling to what was otherwise just an old peeling paint door handle in a very quaint small town. Here http://spccreative.smugmug.com/gallery/2958746#253708686
is a link to the same shot in its original format. I think both are fun. Just learning new PP techniques and killing a heck of a lot of time.

Not everything is as it appears.

I passed this place three times before the little voice inside my head that says, "Stop and take a picture of that," actually won. The first time the voice said to stop, I was on my way to an event and didn't want to be late. The second time, I couldn't decide if I would be photographing a quaint impression of rural Americana or if I would in some citi-fied way be poking fun at the people working and gathering in this place where I wouldn't have ordered a Coke, much less a burger or steak. I've always been sensitive about people's feelings, and l worry about offending or frightening someone when I pull out my camera.

The third time, that little voice convinced me to turn around and go back because I had nothing to lose. I could pull over and even leave the car running while I snapped a few shots, and I'd be back on the road in no time. I'm trying to teach myself to slow down and get the shots that I know I should take, and it is a work in progress. I am a work in progress.

Wouldn't you know it? As I was leaving, the owner came out, flagged me down and asked me what I was doing. Who can blame him for being suspicious? I could have been an insurance adjuster, a real estate appraiser, a hollywood scout or someone up to no good at all. When I explained that I was just out shooting for the sake of art, he lightened up and even encouraged me to come in for a "soda water."

I clammed up and mumbled something about needing to get on down the road. Truth is, I DID want to get to that gorgeous courthouse on the hill before the day ran out of light, but it wasn't long before I started wishing that I had taken the time to meet Rake and the regulars and to learn about the cafe in the little brick house behind this burned out shell. By the number of pickup trucks that pulled into that caliche parking lot in just a matter of minutes, I realized that the yellow sign provided a service. Obviously, Rake knows his way around food-- and the neighbors want to know when he is cooking.

Next time we go that way we will stop in and check it out. They seemed like very nice people, and I must learn to hear the stories that go with my pictures while there's still someone telling them.

Good intentions

Someone probably had big plans for this bundle of plywood, but that was a long time ago.

And the Rebel went down too! Both the Rebel re-enactors AND the DReb. Perhaps a little too much drama for one week.

First, Mike's re-enactor group portrayed the 13th Maine Infantry in last week's event in Madisonville. They actually look like a pretty cohesive group when they are on the Union side. And yes, the Rebels went down. Dern Yankees shot 'em in the back after a truce. Hmmmm.

And for real life. Remember the last week's 40D crisis? Well, the trusty if slow Rebel died this week. Actually, I think it's just a coincidence, but I feel like I've been chased by electronic gremlins. The good news is that the 40D is under warranty is somewhere between here and the Canon Service Center. I'm anxiously awaiting its return. The bad news is that I don't even have the DREB for backup right now. It may or may not be worth repairing, but in any case, it's not so trusty anymore. I know worse things could happen, so I will just go on.

At least things can be replaced and upgraded, so all will be right in a day or two. I'd been looking for an excuse to replace it, but had hoped to pass this one along to one of my sons who has an amazing artistic eye rather than bury it.

Oh -- by the way, here are the other re-enactment photos. Some of the Rebel's last stand, may she rest in peace.
