This gallery is a melange of my photographic styles as well as a look into my daily life. I try to capture something new every day or else to find something that fits the day. It's a great excuse to carry my camera with me more often than not, and it allows me to stop and take those pictures that need to be taken.

Slide

As with every other sport I've photographed, the first time out is usually a bit of a bust with oodles of lessons learned for next time, and a few decent images. I had some time to kill this weekend before my equine portrait session, so decided to see what I could do with the events that were going on in the arena. I could watch these riders all day long . . . They are amazing and their animals are absolute works of art.

First Love

Just a quick pick from a portrait session with Rachel and Boomer. Straight out of camera, no editing. I can't wait to sort through these and process them.

Same guitar as yesterday . . . different part of it. This was Ian's first electric guitar. He bought it while he was in high school, and after he got a second and better one, took this one apart and stripped it down to the bare wood. He did some fancy stuff, burning parts of the face to bring out the wood grain. He reshaped the frets and then rubbed an oil finish on it. This one, he says has a totally different tone from his other instrument, so he really enjoys keeping both around. Back in high school he played with the Jazz Band. He's quite talented but now mostly plays for his own enjoyment.

This is not the first guitar he's refinished. He painted one pink for his girlfriend last year. Here's the link: http://spccreative.smugmug.com/gallery/2958746_n6VBs#159930617_ruFnj

Daylilies in the Morning

It was still early when I shot this, and the blossoms opening for the day had not yet reached their potential. With the previous day's spent blossom still hanging on and at least four or five days of potential promise in coming buds, the daylilies spoke to me.

They really didn't speak. Actually, they sang "This is Your Life" by one of my favorite bands, Switchfoot. It's a very special song to me because it was one of the elements that encouraged me to make some important changes in my own life.

Part of the lyrics go like this:

yesterday is a wrinkle on your forehead
yesterday is a promise that you've broken
don't close your eyes, don't close your eyes
this is your life and today is all you've got now
yeah, and today is all you'll ever have
don't close your eyes
don't close your eyes

this is your life, are you who you want to be

this is your life, is it everything you dreamed that it would be
when the world was younger and you had everything to lose

yesterday is a kid in the corner
yesterday is dead and over

this is your life, are you who you want to be

this is your life, is it everything you dreamed that it would be
when the world was younger and you had everything to lose

Dryer Light

The Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah nearly started playing when my dryer light came on this evening. I was afraid that the old machine had bit the dust because it wouldn't turn on for love or money. While I would be thrilled with one of those pretty new energy efficient models, I really don't want to have to BUY one right now.

As it turns out, it was just another side effect of the never-ending and still-not-progressing kitchen remodel saga. With the microwave plugged in to an outlet in the living room, if you use it without making sure the dining room light is turned off first, all sorts of breakers and fuses start tripping. We never know which one will go out next.

For some crazy reason I can flip every switch in the breaker box with no results. I REFUSE to succumb to helpless female syndrome, but am convinced that our particular electrical system responds only to the Y chromosome. Ahhh. Just one more reason to keep my wonderful husband around still a little longer.

I spent a little time the other day at my son's new first apartment waiting for the cable/internet hookup man so that Ian wouldn't miss time at work. It gave me a chance to photograph some of those items that were on my someday-but-never-gotten around-to list while they were in my home every day.

We happened upon a watermelon and banana eating competition at the beach this weekend. A nice sized crowd gathered to watch, but it took some time and effort to recruit four people with enough spirit to take the challenge. The young man closest to the camera won. His prize . . . McDonald's Gift Cards.

My Hero!

We went to Galveston today, and my very buff boyfriend had to rescue me from the sea creatures.

Actually, we were at the AIA sandcastle competition and this is the backdrop that his company set up to encourage people to vote for their structure as the public favorite. I'm just a sucker for these things.

Something's Missing

Thanks to Hillary for the inspiration and my headline, so blatantly plagiarized from her POD. I could do better on the lighting, but this project is causing me to lose motivation. Besides, there's nothing to see here!

What's happening today? Absolutely nothing . . . again. Yes, every nightmare warning story about kitchen remodeling is absolutely true. With no end in sight, it's been four weeks of grilling, takeout, and paper plates, washing serving utensils and coffee cups in the bath tub, and not even having a place to set things when we take them out of our fridge which, thankfully, still works. The microwave in the family room is an added decorative touch, and I believe the only reason we even have a floor is because we put it in two years ago. Projected finish date for our project . . . April 15 -- yes, 2008. Maybe I should re-read my contract I HOPE it doesn't say 2009.

Even Addie, taking it in from her favoite perch, is bewildered. Note the bandage on her back leg. We had an unplanned canine surgery this week too . . . But that's a story for another day.

Time to Turn on the Lights

Have you ever thought about what it would be like to show someone, for the very first time, how to work a light switch? To explain how to use a microwave, or hot and cold running water, and how to flush a toilet? To introduce them to our culture after a lifetime of danger, war, death, disease and starvation?

We watched a movie this weekend that touched on these things and a whole lot more.

“God Grew Tired of Us” is a documentary (It’s also a book) following the life of several young Sudanese refugees who fled their homeland because of an atrocious war of genocide. They eventually made their way to the United States where everything about our culture was new and foreign to them. Even though there is hope for the featured men, I sat mesmerized, horrified, and deeply saddened by the plight of so many.

I’m not a politically motivated person, but I am a member of the human race. Above all, I am completely baffled as to why or how we as a nation select where to get involved in foreign affairs. Whether or not we should be so focused on Iraq may be the debate of choice these days, but I absolutely do not understand why we have no presence in Darfur, which is a region of Sudan. Especially if we want to eliminate terrorism and genocide.

“God Grew Tired of Us” is a must see. It’s not light . . . it’s not easy . . . and even though there are enough humorous moments to break the tension and make the show extremely watch-able, it’s not fun and entertaining. It's what I call a "thinker" movie. It will make you think as it sheds some very important light on what happens in a part of our world that we know so little about.

“God Grew Tired of Us” Put it on your Netflix list.
