April 17 - Puppies are taking a snooze outside.
April 22, day #16
Green female's wrinkled face. The wrinkles will disappear over time.
April 17 - Puppies sleep most of the time. from the left: green female, pink female, blue male and yellow female (the largest girl in the litter)
We transferred Gela's orange male to Gilda's whelping box. She accepted him right away and he is very happy to nurse. The move will benefit both litters - Gela will not be under pressure from 6 puppies and Gilda, who is producing a lot of milk, will take care of 5 puppies with ease.
April 21 - Orange male is catching up with the rest of Gilda's pups and he looks much rounder now.
Can you spot the orange pup in this pile? He is the smallest.
Puppies are well nourished as Gilda produces a lot of milk. Their coats look great. It is too early to be sure but it looks like all the pups have wirehaired coats.
April 12 - Gilda spends a lot of time with her puppies. She is a very attentive mother.
Gilda with the second puppy - a female, which now is identified with pink ribbon around her neck
Afternoon of April 7, 2005 - Gilda is in her whelping box and is showing the first signs of labor.
In the middle of whelping - three pups are out, one more to go!
Gilda is an easy whelper and excellent mother. She is very careful with puppies.
The whelping is over! Pups are crowding around Gilda and want to nurse. They are strong and vigorous.
April 15 - puppies are 8 days old. Their eyes and ears are still closed. They nurse, they sleep and they crawl around the box. The whelping box is lined with small rugs, which provide good trackion for the pups. The pups' weights more than doubled:
pink 25 oz (at birth 12.6)
yellow 29 oz (at birth 13.8)
green 25 oz (at birth 11.0)
blue 26 oz (at birth 11.4 oz)
All the pups are hungry and show a strong nursing instinct from the beginning. Gilda is ready for her supper as well.
April 22, day#16 - Gilda's pink girl
April 22 - Blue boy has a distinctive "shar-pei" look.
April 29: Gilda is a very playful mom. This is a great way to stimulate pups.
April 29: The whole pack is having a ball under my desk.
April 29 - Dreaming....
Paper towel rolls make good toys for puppies.
May 5 - Gilda is finishing puppies' meal.
May 4 - One of the first supplemental meals.
April 29: Puppies make first attempts to get out of the whelping box! They are starting to play with their toys.
April 29: Puppies are exploring my office; this is where their whelping box is (no wonder it is hard to do any work around here!)
Inquiring minds need to know :-)
The chart shows weights of Gilda's puppies over the 16 days. The color of lines correspond to the color of pups' ribbons. The only male is the pup with blue ribbon. On average Gilda's pups are 15% heavier than Gela's even though when they were born they were quite close in weight. It will be interesting how these numbers will correlate to the pups weight at 8 and 12 weeks . Gilda (23 lbs) is larger than Gela (18-19 lbs).
Gilda's blue boy is the largest pup in her litter and weighs now over 2.5 lbs (1215 grams).
April 27: Baby steps!
April 27, 2005 marks the end of the 3rd week for Gilda's pups.
Puppies ears and eyes are open. We are introducing novel stimuli to the whelping box such as rubber toys, metal bells, rope etc etc.
April 29, 2005 Gilda and Blue boy are playing together. This is the first day when puppies started to play.
April 27: It is a time of a very rapid sensory development. Puppies are taken to new floor surfaces and they take first steps. Their walking is still very awkward. They are also exposed to mild auditory stimuli - such as radio and tv playing in the background.
Gilda is resting comfortably with her four puppies. She whelped:
at 5:20 pm, a wild boar male, weight 11.4 oz, id blue ribbon
at 5:35 pm, a wild boar female, weight 12.6 oz, id pink ribbon
at 7:20 pm, a wild boar female, weight 13.8 oz, yellow ribbon
at 8:45 pm, a wild boar female, weight 11.0 oz, green ribbon
