Taken on Mount Tamalpais in Marin County, California.
There was a time back in 2006, when I lived in San Rafael, that I drove up Mount Tamalpais where the top of the mountain ridge was above the cloudline of an overcast sky. When you broke through the cloud layer it was like a small island of land in a sea of clouds. The experience was magical and of course, I didn't have my camera.
Ever since, whenever I'm back in San Francisco, I make the trek up Tamalpais in hopes of recreating that scenario and actually getting pictures of it this time. Not only does it have to be overcast, the cloud layer has to be below the ridge. It's a pretty specific set of circumstances and more than once I have scaled the mountain on a cloudy day only to find myself driving through dense fog once I've reached the top of the ridge. On this fateful day, however, I may have finally gotten my wish.
Coming up the Panoramic Highway out of Mill Valley, the first sign that success was about to be achieved was discovered. A small hole in the clouds brought a few brilliant rays of sun shining through.
