Florida > Denise  > Travel > Florida: 2008 > Around and About Key West / June 4 to 7, 2008
Key West is one of my favorite places to visit. We parked the car at the hotel, rented scooters, and off we went. My friend and I just laughed our way through the streets - it was such a fun time. And now - looking at these photos, I can't wait until we go again :)

Denise > Southernmost Point in the United States - Key West (June 3, 2008)

The marker, actually built to resemble a buoy, stands at the furthest south tip of Key West. The monument notes that Cuba is only 90 miles away.

On the top of the monument is painted the logo of The Conch Republic. Twenty years ago, Key West, seeking to enhance its reputation as a free-wheeling, fun-loving, party without consequence kind of town, seceded from the United States, declaring itself The Conch Republic. Every April, a ten-day party celebrates the event. If that's the case, and Key West no longer considers itself to be part of the United States, then the Southernmost Point in the United States would actually be one key up, in Boca Chica. :)

Here's a map of the southernmost point - go have a "look-see."

Denise > Sloppy Joe's Bar - Key West (June 4, 2008)

Sloppy Joe's has been located at the corner of Greene and Duval Streets since 1937.

The official beginning of Sloppy Joe's Bar, the famous and infamous Key West saloon, was December 5, 1933--the day Prohibition was repealed. The bar was destined to go through two name changes and a sudden change of location before it would become Sloppy Joe's, seen by millions of visitors to Florida's southernmost outpost.

It opens at 9:00 a.m. As morning transforms into day, so does Sloppy Joe's. Live entertainment begins at noon and lunch continues with a menu offering quality food and satisfying large drinks.
