Fort Zachary Taylor State Park - Key West (June 6, 2008) Battery Osceola is located on the Atlantic Ocean side where engagements with the great European powers were more likely expected to occur. That is why more cannons were on this side . The original fort was built in 1845 to fight the British.

Construction of Fort Zachary Taylor began in 1845, shortly after Florida became a state. In 1850, the fort was named after U.S. President Zachary Taylor, who died in office earlier that year.
