dannypam > We began our tour through Myanmar (formerly Burma) in the capitol city of Yangon (formerly Rangoon). Our first stop was the impressive Sule Pagoda, in the heart of downtown Yangon. Built almost 2000 years ago it is believed to contain a hair from Buddha's head.
dannypam > We walked clockwise around the pagoda with its numerous surrounding temples.
dannypam > Next we visited the huge reclining Buddha at Chauk Htat Gyi.
dannypam > Ringing the bells placed in the temples is a way of declaring your good deeds to the world. But you should always ring an odd number of times, like three or five.
dannypam > The highlight of Yangon is the 1000-year-old Shwedagon Pagoda. It is covered with $90 Million dollars of gold and contains 4350 diamonds including a 76-carat diamond at its tip.
dannypam > The golden dome is surrounded by a 14-acre complex filled with temples and shrines. Shoes and socks are removed and we walked clockwise around this peaceful place.
dannypam > We arrived as sunset approached giving us some relief from the heat.
dannypam > From the top of the complex you can look down on the city and this covered walkway leading up to the Pagoda.
dannypam > Everywhere we looked there were beautiful statues celebrating the Buddhist religion.
