Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Shazam!

(October 10, 2008) Actually this is Jim in Sensei mode, demonstrating being centered and still extending energy. What you don't see is the person flying off to the right, like a pebble out of a slingshot.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Heads up!

(October 9, 2008) Last rodeo shot for now. I'm done processing. Although it looks like I'm about to be run over here, I'm shooting through the fence. I'm not as nimble as Gene Hyder. Take a look at the muscle definition on the left horse's shoulder and foreleg. Now I understand why she launched the cowboy so high and far. Her front legs are built like pistons.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Cowboy not needed

(October 8, 2008) I'm almost done processing the shots. Y'all are going to have to bear with me one or two days more. I can either process or shoot, and I have to process to clear out the RAW files on my computer. They're clogging up the memory.

If you want to see the San Dimas Rodeo gallery, here's where all the photos are going: http://chaosgraphics.smugmug.com/gallery/6143622_vwEAc#386730452_Vk7A6

(October 7, 2008) Charlie Sampson gets credit where credit is due:

Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Run away! Run away!

(October 6, 2008) Back to rodeo shots. This is from Saturday in San Dimas. Here's something else I like about rodeo -- It's one of the few sports where the animal can act on its opinion and win. I'm betting on the bull in this one.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Urban drama

(October 5, 2008) A quick break from the rodeo shots from yesterday. On my way home, half a block from my house, this Cooper's Hawk flew in front of me in fast pursuit of a sparrow. It caught the sparrow at this fence and stayed there just long enough for me to pull over, unzip the camera from my backpack and shoot two shots from the car window. Then it was gone, the poor sparrow with it. Good fortune for the hawk and me, bad for the sparrow.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Andele!

(Oct. 4) New rodeo today -- the San Dimas Western Days Rodeo. I was lucky enough to be able to go and shoot a bit, thanks to the photographer from five days ago. It was raining too. In one week we've gone from 100 plus weather to jacket weather. This horse was part of a family specialty act with Andalusian horses and, for me, the treat of the rodeo. They didn't do much more than ride around and show off the horses, but Andalusians are such an ancient fantastical breed that they take your breath away. And the family of rider/owners spoke with the clipped, lilting dialect of northern Mexico, which is the only Spanish that I feel I understand well. For a few additional shots:

Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Circuit riders

(October 3, 2008) Another integral part of the event -- the rodeo queens --, although I confess that I have not ever figured out that part of the rodeo world. They appear with flags before each event and they are presented at some point during the rodeo. I think they are selected for the year for each city involved, but I don't know what their responsibilities are beyond looking pretty, smiling, helping out, and galloping around the arena a lot. They have very cool chaps too.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > My best girl

(October 2, 2008) And finally, this is what the rodeo is all about: taking your sweetheart out for a good time.

If you want to see more from the rodeo, take a peek here:

Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Annoyed patience

(October 1, 2008) Another unsung hero -- the cowpony. This is the announcer's horse. Sometimes he looks exasperated, sometimes martyred, and sometimes a little mischievious. But he's out there every night, dodging broncs and bulls and enduring the fireworks of the entertainment acts.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > A game of catch

(September 30, 2008) The wranglers and pickup riders are also a unique part of the rodeo, and their skill often unrecognized by the crowd. Catching an uncooperative horse and then unbuckling a strap on him at a dead gallop should be an event in itself.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Behind the lens

(Sept. 29, 2008) In case anyone thinks that the job of a rodeo photographer looks like a walk in the park, here's why the PRCA doesn't let just anyone in the arena:

Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > "We aren't worthy"

(Sept. 28, 2008) A moment to honor bullfighter Clifford Maxwell, who just made a spectacular save. If you want to see why he's the man of the moment, here's a shot of the action:

Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Early ambition

(Sept. 27, 2008) It's time for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Rodeo, and this little cowboy wanted in on the action.
Andrea Kaus (ChaosGraphics) > Work, work, work

(Sept. 26, 2008) Inspired by everyone else's shots of their work spaces, I looked around and assessed what was on my plate. Sigh. It's Friday, and I think it's time for tequila o'thirty.
Shazam!

(October 10, 2008) Actually this is Jim in Sensei mode, demonstrating being centered and still extending energy. What you don't see is the person flying off to the right, like a pebble out of a slingshot.
