Tim Voss > Lambert's Landing; Saint Paul, Minnesota

Framing the towboat with the power line tower is a bit of a gimmick to my mind. But I do like the result. The towboat is the J.W. Hershey.

The railroad lift bridge dates to 1913. The Robert Street Bridge, in the background, dates to 1926.

Tim Voss > Towboat JW Hershey at Lambert's Landing; Saint Paul, Minnesota

Saint Paul is the historic head of navigation on the Mississippi River. A great deal of industry has flourished here. Most recently, there were several grain elevators and a coal-fired power plant along the city's waterfront. During harvest season, towboats and their barges would haul coal upriver for the power plant and take grain south. it was common to see several towboats moored at Lambert's Landing (aka The Lower Landing). The elevators are nearly all gone now. The coal-fired power plant was torn down this year (2009). So catching three towboats at the same time is a rare thing these days.

Here's a view of the Hershey's bow and knees. The Robert Street Bridge is in the background. It dates to 1926.

The Midland and the Jane G. Huffman are rafted together behind the J.W. Hershey at Lambert's Landing. The fog-shrouded Robert Street Bridge is just visible in the background.

Tim Voss > Fountain at the Upper Landing; Saint Paul, Minnesota

Autumn river fogs can create pearly luminescent sunrises.
Tim Voss > Maiden Lane; Saint Paul, Minnesota

Maiden Lane is really an alley between Summit and Selby Avenues near the St. Paul Cathedral. It originally provided access to carriage houses that were part of the mansions along this part of Summit. The cobblestones, gardens, and the few remaining carriage houses give it a lot of charm. It's my favorite street in St. Paul.
Tim Voss > Twin Cities and Western Train; Saint Paul, Minnesota

I heard the train coming, saw the first locomotive, and couldn't get the camera to work while wearing mittens. Forget changing lenses! So, I missed the lead locomotive. This is what I did get, wide angle and all.
Tim Voss > Steam Plume, District Energy Plant; Saint Paul, Minnesota

Flue gasses condensed instantly on this cold January Saturday morning.

The Saint Paul District Energy Plant produces electricity by burning wood chips and natural gas. The leftover steam heats homes and downtown buildings.

Tim Voss > Steam Plumes on a Cold Day; Saint Paul, Minnesota

There's a mill in Saint Paul that recycles paper into packaging material. All the steam it produces can look downright ominous on a cold January morning.

Tim Voss > Sun and Trees; Saint Paul, Minnesota

In a way, this one feels more like November than the last half of January. In another way, the cold trees could be reaching for the sun. The trees aren't as focused as they might be. But I like the image so much that I put it up, anyway.
