Los Amigos Oldtimers' Hike & BBQ - July 21st, 2008
This is the second year of our Oldtimers' BBQ and Hike. This year Tracy Hephner (Trust Board member) added the option to do a little work. We lucked out with a near perfect day and not a drop of rain, yet cloud cover made things very pleasant.

 > On July 21, 2008 Los Amigos de Valles Caldera held a Hike and Oldtimers' BBQ at the Valles Caldera National Preserve. The hike was around the Cerro Seco Trail. You can see that this sign has been chewed by a bear. (Caldera Staff have seen him munching on the sign.)
 > The hiking group on the trail up the mountain. (Greg Kendall, Los Amigos Vice Chair, led the group. He is behind the camera.)
 > Dorothy Hoard, tries to enjoy her sandwich on the trail.
 > There was an abundance of beautiful butterflies, like this one, surrounding us during the hike.
 > We stopped for a moment to take a group photo.
 > This hike doesn't provide the continuous views of the Cerro Abrigo hike, but there were a few long views such as this one looking down into the Valle San Antonio. It's more of a forest hike, and a very peaceful and pleasant one.
 > Stephen Henry, a VCNP Trust Board member and his new friend (look closely).
 > There is a burned area along the trail. None in our group knew when this fire on Cerro Seco happened nor how it started.
 > Cathy Stanhope & her nephew Travis in the burned area with Redondito behind them.
 > Greg called this plant "Horse Meat." Dorothy Hoard had to keep correcting Greg by telling him it's called "Horse Mint." In either case, it's a spicy version of Mint that has a nice after-kick. Greg recommends it as being quite tasty. (The leaves that is.)
 > Before the afternoon BBQ, Ana Stephan, Cultural Resources Coordinator for the VCNP, gives a talk about protecting cultural resources and historic building restoration procedures. The BBQ was held at the "Bunk" house, a fully furnished place that can sleep a large number of people and it can be rented!
 > Molly Padgett, a biology student intern, gives a talk on the grass monitoring program at the Caldera. Doug Fraser, Los Amigos Chairman, assists.
 > Folks listening to the speakers.
 > Gary Morton has the contract to run cattle at the Valles Caldera this season. He lives with his family in the Bond Cabin. Besides being a top notch Cowboy, Gary is also a well known artist. He has a large painting hanging directly outside the Governor's office in Santa Fe. Gary offered to create and donate a painting of the Bond cabin. Los Amigos will sell prints of it as a fundraiser for the restoration of the Bond Cabin. Isn't that fantastic! (Details in a few weeks.)
 > Kirk Thompson mans the BBQ while his fiance Laura Fraser prepares the next set of burgers.
