Dawkins > From Col. Keuker's barn in Waterloo, Illinois.
Dawkins > I didn't make it out to Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery for the Memorial Day celebration on Monday. I did have time on Thursday afternoon, though. It was overcast and sprinkling lightly. I saw this marker for "Richard Cottle", a WWII vet with a single rose on it. So simple and beautiful. This really was the message of remembrance I was hoping to capture. Memorial Day use to be referred to as "Decorations Day" and the purpose was to place flowers at or "decorate" the graves of veterans. May 2009.

Dawkins > Always double-check you're spelling. Joke. No really, always have someone else check your government paperwork. These things are permanent. Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery January 22, 2009. Notice how close the newer markers are placed. The old sections of the cemetery allowed generous space between stones. The rule for the newer sections seems to be "squeeze them in".
Dawkins > Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery on December 24, 2008. This grave was not far from the cemetery office. There are acres upon acres of graves neatly lined up in rows along the gently rolling hills not far from the Mississippi River. The man at the office told us there are more than 17,000 veterans buried here. The newer graves seem to be closer together with less space between the stones. The stones are engraved with the veteran's information on one side and a number engraved on the reverse of the stone. We saw a few stones in an older section that had spouse information engraved on the backside. Some of the newer stones (dated 2007-2008) also included brief quotes of advice along with identifying phrases like "husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend" sometimes all on one stone. The traditional name, service info and dates seem to be enough for me, personally. I think it goes without saying that each headstone represents the loss of a person that was important to someone.
Dawkins > There are over 17,000 veterans buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. I believe these wreaths were placed as part of the "Wreaths Across America" project. Photo taken Dec. 24, 2008 in one of the older sections of the cemetery near the Mississippi River.

Dawkins > This is the WW memorial in Freeburg, IL off High and Belleville Streets. I edited this photo to black and white because the original color photo of the bronze statue shows some kind of greenish goo in the soldier's mouth. I can't imagine that someone would want to vandalize a veteran's monument. Perhaps it's just a reminder that it's time for some care and maintenance.
