The Buffalo Soldiers of the Arizona Territory - Ladies and Gentlemen of the Regiment, Headquarters Mesa, Arizona is an 'INDEPENDENT ORGANIZATION'.
Fort Bayard, New Mexico is an historic territorial post dating back to 1863 and was designated as a National Histoic Landmark in March, 2004 (Buffalo Soldiers Heritage Center). From "Buffalo Soldiers" protecting miners and settlers to fighting tuberculosis. Under orders, the 125th U.S. Colored Infantry, "Buffalo Soldiers" of the 9th Cavalry, and all-Black regiment, under Lt. Derr established a Post named "Fort Bayard", 1866. General G.D. Bayard, U.S. Volunteers had served in the territories of New Mexico and Arizona. Today, they are honored with a statue of Cpl. Clinton Greaves, Medal of Honoree, who single-handedly saved his fellow troopers. From 1866 - 1899, Fort Bayard was the center of operations for the area. The 300 year campaign of Spaniard, Apache, Pueblo, Navajo, Mexican, and American forces came to an end while Lt. John J. Pershing, 6th Cavalry, served here. He later became famous as General "Black Jack" Pershing. Fort Bayard was transformed from Post to U.S. Army General Hospital in 1899.
"Cathy Williams", the only known Black Female Buffalo Soldier, served at both Fort Cummings and Fort Bayard as Private "William Cathay", Company A, 38th Infantry until her gender was discovered during a visit to the post surgeon. She received a medical discharge from the Army in 1868. Fort Bayard Medical Center became a medical center in the 1900s after the army troops left.
Pvt. Michelle London-Marable, protraying: "Cathy Williams" and Commander Fred Marable, protraying two officers: Lt. John H. Alexander and Colonel Charles Young the 2nd and 3rd Black Officers to graduate from West Point Academy. We had a great pleasured and opportunity to visited Fort Bayard, New Mexico to honored the last time "Cathy Williams" was enlisted as a "Black Female Buffalo Soldier". Fort Bayard 'NATIONAL CEMETERY' "Buffalo Soldiers" buried. Ms. Earline Parham, Lady of the Regiment shared the educational and enliven the history of the role of the Buffalo Soldiers in the Southwest.
