The Amphitheater at Pompeii is the oldest and best preserved in the world (c. 80 BC). This was the site of a famous riot with neighboring Nuceria in 59 AD which caused Nero to ban the games for 10 years. Precisely ten years after its reopening, Mt. Vesuvius erupted and buried the entire city in ash (Dec. 28, 2003).
