Alaska Discovery Voyage: Prince William Sound...Photography by Richard L Middleton, www.greatriver.com
Sometimes an adventure is just too good for words. That about sums up our recent 3-week excursion to Alaska. Planes, boats, and trains (and a rental car) combined to help us find what we were looking for in a genuine travel adventure. Then a road/train trip from Anchorage north to Denali and south to Seward and then Whitney, where we boarded our little DISCOVERY vessel to spend a week searching out wildlife, glacier, and wilderness in the silent bays of Prince William Sound.

 > One of our favorite little excursions from Anchorage was a day-trip to Seward on the Alaska Railway. It was a cool, rainy August day, but allows an easy way to see lots of country, landlocked glaciers, Turnagain Arm, etc. Each car had a college student providing information about what we were seeing. We really appreciated that.

We were locky enough to see a unique tidal wave on Turnagain that attracted surfers, kayakers, and two large separate pods of resident white Beluga whales. That was a great sight!

 > I love this photo of Seward Harbor. We enjoyed eating on the long public dock. Resurrection Bay receeded into the distance. The salmon run was occuring and fishermen and campers lined the shore.
 > The Horned Puffin was one of our "goal birds" when we came to Alaska. We saw this and the Tufted puffin at the Sea Life Aquarium in Seward, Alaska.
 > So THIS is the kind of place Sarah Palin hails from! We always treasured running into such a local hangout. This has dollar bills pinned to the ceiling and everything else pinned to the walls!!
 > Taukeetna, Alaska is a little community that proved a perfect landing spot for artists. Many historic cabins are home to art galleries. Just off the main road to Mt. McKinley.
 > Lunch on the DISCOVERY. This was truly a small boat cruise.
 > Bunk space on the DISCOVERY was limited and spartan, but entirely comfortable!
 > Dahl porpoise playing with us out in Prince William Sound.
