Sometimes an adventure is just too good for words. That about sums up our recent 3-week excursion to Alaska. Planes, boats, and trains (and a rental car) combined to help us find what we were looking for in a genuine travel adventure. Then a road/train trip from Anchorage north to Denali and south to Seward and then Whitney, where we boarded our little DISCOVERY vessel to spend a week searching out wildlife, glacier, and wilderness in the silent bays of Prince William Sound.

After the fishing trip, Anchorage became our home base. We rented a car from Anchorage and drove north toward Denali National Park. Accommodations turned out to be tricky... especially if you were on the road at the same time as a cruise land excursion. Some folks we visited with felt they stayed in places they wouldn't leave their dog! We were advised to make reservations at the Princess Lodges in key places outside of Anchorage. They are huge, modern hotels in scenic locations. Our photo here, of Mt. McKinley in all its glory was taken from the deck of the McKinley Princess Lodge. Also recommended was the Copper Harbor lodge. The lodges have lovely hiking trails nearby, but bear attacks happen even on those grounds, so always be alert. The bears really can pop up anywhere.
