Riviera Maya, Mexico. Photographs by Richard L Middleton, www.greatriver.com
The all-inclusive resorts of Mexico's Riviera Maya offer a perfect blend of sun, luxury, birding, and cultural and natural history depth to call us back again and again. Two weeks was not long enough when there are neighboring beaches, Mayan ruins, world class heritage sites and tropical birding all within the reach of a local community transport. Oh yes, and great snorkeling/diving opportunities (I saw my first turtles grazing on sea grass in near by Akumel Bay!) We found that the GRAND SIRENIS HOTEL offered all the above right within the resort grounds! If you go, fly into the airport near Playa del Carmen (Cozumel is just off shore) and catch either a private taxi or take the hotel shuttle on to your chosen destination.

 > Bring your tennis shoes for walking the shore and watershoes... there is a lot of choral debris even in the swimming areas. We enjoyed great snorkeling right at the hotel swimming beach!!
 > We appreciated the attention to detail at the Grand Sirenis. White rock to resemble the predominate limestone used in the Mayan ruins, the pyramid style which recalls Mayan architecture, and decorating which recalled the Mayan arts.
 > Mayan and Aztec influences were rather freely mixed in the area. This backdrop actually illustrates the Aztec calendar, though it is the Mayan Calandar that is considered to be one of the most accurate and detailed calandars known to man.
 > Mayan Ruin at the Grand Serenis
 > Stone carving of an Eagle Icon eating a human heart at Chichen Itza.
 > Mayan Ruins in Tulum
 > A quiet moment at a private cenote. Cenotes are underground pools of fresh water which occur throughout the Yucatan Penninsula providing beautiful, natural swimming in fresh water. Often pools are far below ground level and provide entry for snorkelers to underground streams which flow through limestone caves throughout this region!
 > Mayan Cenotes (fresh water in natural limestone basins) surround the vicinity of the Riviera Maya
 > The all inclusive nature of the resorts in the Riviera Maya makes them a favorite for tourists. There are many fine resorts between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
