Jonathan Wilson (jawsnap) > __01/07/10__ San Vicente Fog
Riding my bike along San Vicente Blvd, I encountered a wall of cold, wet fog. What looked really neat was the car headlights as they passed behind the coral trees in the median. As you can see, the iPhone was not the best choice to capture this light. In fact, it pretty much failed and I was sad.
The upside is that I now know that I can get some cool shots if I come back here with my SLR next time it gets super-foggy.

Jonathan Wilson (jawsnap) > __01/06/10__ Pink Clouds
Shot outside my house, straight from the iPhone except for some noise reduction. It's quite noisy for ISO 91, but I'm impressed with how it rendered the colors. I'm really looking forward to Lightroom 3's improved noise reduction...

Jonathan Wilson (jawsnap) > __01/05/10__ Food-Dispensing Spiral
This is the inside of a vending machine with nothing to vend. Shot with iPhone, desaturated and contrast added in Lightroom.

Jonathan Wilson (jawsnap) > __01/04/10__ Blue Barnacles
That's what they look like to me, anyways. Of course they're really flowers on a stalk-type-thing. I desaturated most colors except blue and purple to highlight the flowers. Also added a bit of vignetting.

Jonathan Wilson (jawsnap) > __01/03/10__ Tool
Tool is a production company in Santa Monica. You can watch their commercials on their site. The sign caught my eye as I was riding my bike around.

Also, check out my blog post of portraits I took over the winter break in Tucson.

Jonathan Wilson (jawsnap) > __01/02/10__ Holiday Lights
We saw Avatar tonight - it's pretty awesome! I took this shot after we left the movie - it's one of many light displays at the Century City Westfield mall.

Thanks for the comments on yesterday's photo! Usually you use 12 and 20-sided dice for things like dungeons and dragons, but I never played that. I'm thinking my friends and I used to make up games that used these dice, but I really can't remember for sure.

Jonathan Wilson (jawsnap) > __01/01/10__ Twenty-Ten
Happy New Year! Nerdy, I know. I don't even know why I have a 20 and 12-sided die.
I positioned the dice on my glossy black file cabinet and set my remote flash next to them at a fairly low power. I had to play around to get the exposure right, but the biggest thing was making sure the file cabinet was clean since every minuscule dust particle gets highlighted with the flash. I still had to use the spot removal tool quite a bit to clean up the final shot.

[last year] a similar experience this New Years...
Jonathan Wilson (jawsnap) > _12/31/09_ Ostrich!
Happy New Year! I started my photo-a-day project on 2/29/08, so I still have a couple months until I round out my year of photos.
Today my wife and I drove back to LA from Tucson, and we stopped at the Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch near Picacho Peak along Interstate 10. It's well worth the stop if you're in the area! Only $5 lets you feed ostriches, deer, goats, donkeys and lorikeets. Read my blog post if you want to know more!
This was actually the first photo I took while we were there, and I like it because the ostrich is in good focus and Picacho Peak is in the background.

Jonathan Wilson (jawsnap) > _12/30/09_ Deep Oil
I wouldn't normally post a photo of a painting, but this is a tribute to my wife's late father, who passed away 2 years ago today. One of his hobbies was painting, and he liked to create abstract works. This is one of my favorites.
We spent a good portion of the day photographing and cataloging all of the paintings at my mother-in-law's house, there were 55! The plan is to post them on a website where people can buy them and have the money go towards a scholarship that was created in his honor at the University of Arizona. The scholarship is awarded each year to a medical student interested in rural medicine.
