Tim Voss > Apartment Building 2; Saint Paul, Minnesota

Mac-Groveland is a very nice neighborhood in Saint Paul with lovely homes and gardens. But I managed to find an interesting alleyway despite all the charm.

Tim Voss > Rail Yard Signal Tower; Saint Paul, Minnesota

I'm betting most people will gloss over this one. But there's a lot of subtle color and detail here. The shot was handheld at 1/15th of a second.
Tim Voss > Fireworks; Saint Paul, Minnesota

There was a fireworks display at a St. Paul Saints minor league ball game. This is my version of it from a mixed residential and industrial neighborhood near Midway Stadium.
Tim Voss > Saint Paul Cathedral; Saint Paul, Minnesota

This is a filtered black and white revision of a photo found in my Saint Paul, Minnesota: Warm gallery.

The Cathedral of Saint Paul is one of Saint Paul's greatest landmarks. It looks out over downtown with a monumental presence. The church was the child of Archbishop John Ireland and architect Emmanuel Manqueray. Construction took eight years and the building was dedicated in 1915. Interior work continued through the 1930's. A very expensive exterior restoration ran 2001 to 2003. It included tuckpointing the granite facades and sheathing the central dome in 100,000 square feet of copper.
Tim Voss > Street Tree Memorial; Saint Paul, Minnesota

Life is hard for trees planted on downtown streets.
Tim Voss > Trout Brook Canal; Saint Paul, Minnesota

No, this isn't an open sewer. It's a stone canal that was completed in 1894. It carries the water of Trout Brook into a tunnel. That tunnel runs under what were once rail yards that lined the Mississippi River south and east of downtown Saint Paul. A large part of those rail yards have been replaced by a nature area. Trout Brook, however, has yet to be exhumed. Trains still cross the canal, as does a bike trail that follows an old rail grade. That trail crosses the bridge in the foreground. The background includes an abandoned rail bridge.

Tim Voss > Union Depot; Saint Paul, Minnesota

The Union Depot is a beautiful building blighted by banners, dumpsters, utility boxes, and assorted other visual clutter. One would hope for better. This view, from a fifth floor window, is the best I've been able to do.

The Great Northern Railroad began construction of its final Saint Paul depot in 1917. It was part of a $15 million upgrade in the GN's Saint Paul facilities. As such, the depot wasn't completed until 1923. It's a Beaux-Arts design with a massive Doric colonnade fronting the head house. The last passenger train departed in 1971. Currently a condo development occupies the top floors of the head house. There are plans to turn the old depot into a regional transit hub and, possibly, bring back passenger rail service.
Tim Voss > Balloon Bouquet and Fire Hydrant; Saint Paul, Minnesota

Many thanks to old buddy Wayne for picking out the view for this one.
Tim Voss > Mickey's Diner at Night; Saint Paul, Minnesota

Ah, Mickey's... It's been St. Paul's favorite greasy spoon for many years. The dining car was built in 1937 by the Jerry O' Mahony Company in New Jersey. The car was shipped to St. Paul and opened for business on this same spot in 1939. It has been resisting the march of time and urban renewal efforts ever since. By the bye, it's not a real railroad car. But it is on the National Register of Historic Places. http://www.mickeysdiningcar.com/
