Great Reading!
"Caroline, Wilderness Woman", Feature story, P. 2

Since 1996, author Pat Middleton has been writing and rewriting an historical fiction novel based on the 10 page/10 year diary left by a young Illinois woman who followed the Keokuk and Blackhawk into Iowa and as they migrated westward along the Des Moines River.

Her husband was a Trader associated with the American Fur Company out of St. Louis. Caroline found that with William most often needed in the courthouse at St. Louis, she became the storekeeper.

Caroline negotiated her trade and raised 3 children in the Iowa wilderness of the 1830s. All three survived.
