Hal Tyler > I was in the Savegre Mountain Hotel Biological Reserve of the San Gerardo de Dota in Costa Rica looking for the nesting area of the Resplendent Questzal. Fortunately a bird watcher, that I passed on the trail, had spotted one and shared the location with me. I set up my tripod and camera at the spot of the sighting and waited. After about an hour, this male Questzal appeared.

Hal Tyler > We were sailing with Leo Moore out of Deltaville, VA aboard his "Mr. Wizzard" in the Piankatank River. We had just rounded the bend heading into the mouth of Wilton Creek when I spotted this Juvenile Osprey. I grabbed my camera and got a couple of shots off before he flew off down river.

Hal Tyler > We were visiting my wife's family who live on a farm near Clifton, Tenn. and on this particular morning, I was scouting for bird images. On ahead of me, this Barred Owl was standing on the ground next to the road. I went over to see if it had been injured by a passing car but when I was within two or three feet, he flew up into the nearby tree. It turned out to be a perfect spot and the light couldn't have been better if it had been planned.

Hal Tyler > In Northern Virginia, along the Potomac River, I found a small abandoned boat dock. Standing at the end of the dock, I was able to get close to this Osprey Nest which was on top of a post sticking out of the water. In this image the male has just returned to the nest. Note the chick on the right side of the nest.

Hal Tyler > It was springtime and I was watching the activity at the Heron Rookery in the James River Park in downtown Richmond, VA as this Great Blue Heron flew by. He was busy providing sticks to his mate for nest building. The female will accept or choose not to accept the stick that the male brings. I watched as several sticks were purposely dropped by the female.

Hal Tyler > In the Okavango Delta of Botswana, I was in a boat looking for birds and luckily spotted this Lilac-breasted Roller. This bird scans for large insects from low perches and explodes in a riot of color when giving chase. Their call is a loud harsh squawk, 'zaaak'. Rollers get their name from their impressive courtship flight, a fast, shallow dive from considerable elevation with a rolling or fast rocking motion, accompanied by loud raucous calls.
