Last night, I went on an epic photo adventure with some of my favorite photographers.  Matt Frankel, Brian and Vanessa Koprowski, and Don Burkett and I met up at the University of Chicago.  One of the highlights was getting into Bond Chapel after a wedding finished.  After we got our shots, we were waiting outside to move to the next spot.  We were lucky to get into the chapel, but, in the end, my favorite shot was from the outside looking in.

This is Why We Do HDR
For me, HDR is not usually about making a normal scene look like it's out of a science fiction movie.  It's not about turning a mundane shot into an interesting shot. Many times, it's about capturing an image that would otherwise be impossible. In this scene outside of Bond Chapel, the afternoon light was directly hitting the face of the chapel.  A correct exposure for the outside of the chapel left the inside almost completely dark.  Exposing for the inside of the chapel left the outside blown out. I merged 9 exposures, one stop apart, for the final image in Photomatix.

This shot was not intended to relate to the disaster on the East Coast, but I cannot look at this image without thinking about it. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by Hurricane Sandy.
I took this from the parking deck at the University of Illinois-Chicago. I recommend that you find this parking deck and make a morning out of shooting here. I spent an hour or two here last weekend. I gave a bit of a description of how to get here in this post.
As for the processing on this shot, I ran four different exposures through Nik HDR Efex Pro 2 and used the "Sinister" preset. I combined that image with an original exposure for the sky and tweaked in CS5.
Thanks to everyone that visited, commented, and "favorited" my Halloween moon shot from this summer on Flickr. It ended up going to #1 on Explore for October 31st. That is definitely a first for me. If you haven't seen it, check out Full Moon Over the Waves on Flickr.
When I'm out shooting with other photographers, I'll as them if they think they've gotten any good shots. I guess it's one of my pet peeves, but I can't stand it when they say, "I have no idea. We'll see when I get them on the computer." I get this. There are times when I think a shot will be great and it's not and vice versa. But usually people are not sure if there shot will be sharp. For the type of city photography we're talking about, where the subject is usually not moving, you should end up with a memory card of images where 100% of them are sharp.
