The first apartment of Pavel and Helga in Prague was on the 6th floor of Třída Obránců míru 23 (the building with balconies on the right side of the photo next to the green painted house). When Dasa was born, we already lived on the 3rd floor (we moved in 1949). The name of the avenue is an illustrative lesson in history (see below).

In the 19th century until 1940, and again after the liberation in 1945, the avenue was named Belcrediho after the Austrian-Hungarian prime minister and minister of state Count Belcredi. During the German occupation, it was renamed Letenská, and in June 1947 renamed again King George VI. as an expression of gratitude for British participation in the struggle for the liberation of Europe[1], and then throughout the communist period until 1990 Třída Obránců míru (defenders of peace). In 1990 it was renamed after the social democratic politician Milada Horáková, executed in the 1950s. In popular parlance it has always been called “Belcredka”.

The avenue is a major street with two-way tram tracks, passing in western direction parallel to the Vltava river (Moldau) on the left bank, connecting the Prague Castle with Strossmayerovo Square. At the bottom of the street on Strossmayerovo Square is the pseudo-Gothic Catholic church of St. Anthony of Padua built in 1908 - 1911 by architect Francis Mikš.
