![Million Dollar Smile
I was walking up 7th Avenue yesterday afternoon, where I met Kyle. He was holding up a big sign:
"Jabba the Hut has kidnapped my Sister... Need money to hire Han "Chewey to rescue her."
He was cool to have his picture taken and seemed to be a nice guy. The endless stream of pedestrians coming from Times Square made it hard to get a clean shot in, but ultimately it worked out. 学校で習ったアメリカ社会を形容する「人種のるつぼ」と「人種のサラダボール」という言葉は全く違う意味だという事をさっき知りました。
人種のるつぼ
多民族国家アメリカを象徴する言葉として有名で…多文化主義社会のうち、それぞれの文化が互いに混じり合って同化し、結果として一つの独特な共通文化を形成していく社会を指す。
人種のサラダボール
ニューヨークの実態は多文化主義であっても、それぞれの文化が共存してはいるものの混じり合うことはない分離社会（セグレゲーション）である。
ともにWikipediaの人種のるつぼの項より
多くの要素を溶かして単一のものにする「るつぼ」と、要素が個性を発揮してまとまっている「サラダ」との事です。

I learned the metaphors for US society melting pot and salad bowl in junior high. And I thought they were the same, but they aren't! That I figured out today thanks to Wikipedia.
