Most of the remote Chalanbeel region of the Northern Bangladesh is difficult to access by road and often only way to navigate is by boats. Bangladesh has always been a region of the world worst affected by natural disasters like floods and cyclone. The country is barely above sea level. Some of the Asia’s largest rivers, including the Ganges and the Jamuna-Brahmaputra, flows through it. Large part of Bangladesh remains submerged during monsoon. Because development has mainly focused around paved roads in Bangladesh, thousand of families living in this region, have poor or no access to basic needs like education, health and information. Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha, a research based organization, has found a unique and innovative solution to deliver important services to environmentally challenged communities in this region. By designing schools and libraries equipped with PC with internet access and workshops for farmers on floating vessels, Shidhulai is able to take services to the doorstep of people living by the rivers. Solar panels installed on the roof of boats not only provide enough clean energy to power equipments like computers and projectors to run computer education and agricultural workshop, it also charge portable batteries for villages to take home to power specially designed solar lamps. Thousand of children attend school, borrow books from its libraries as well as receive computer education, all while floating in vessels that come to their doorstep.
