Heading down the first main flight of stairs on the outside of the buildings that flank one side of the terraces.

It would be impossible to convey a real sense of this place without including views of its surroundings. The Incas who chose this site chose to live amidst incredible natural beauty.

Huayna Picchu Mountain anchors one end of the narrow ridge upon which the site called Machu Picchu was built. Machu Picchu Mountain is at the other end of the ridge. Both mountains were considered sacred by the Incas. Huayna Picchu lies at what modern visitors would consider the far end of the site, and it stands on the far right of this picture, taken shortly after entering the site.

Most tourists, especially those such as our group who are only "day trippers", enter the site by crossing the main section of agricultural terraces about midway between top (where the main entrance for the Incas lies) and the bottom. The terraces begin on the far side of the row of building immediately in front of us.
