Series: The Streets of Cape Town

This morning I went back to Salt River. I wanted to gauge the mood, on the streets and in the air. It had been a while since I last was there and I have to say, there's a big difference, a big difference for all to see. The people are aggressive, anxious, hot, agitated, desperate and life now, is a lot harder, a lot harder than it used to be.

Series: Especially for you!

MUST VIEW IN X3

Yesterday driving to work along the Beach Front, something caught my eye and I glanced to my left, out at sea, in the little cove at Rocklands beach.

I had to look again, I could hardly believe my eyes. There was a U-Boat perhaps 300m offshore.

I immediately pulled over and reached for my camera, but unfortunately didn't have any long glass with me, so just had to do the best I could and hope to have enough to crop but the sea was that same beautiful turquoise hue that we get on an early summer's morning when the sky is clear and the pollution isn't too bad, yet.

When I got to work, I told everyone, you know what, you won't believe it...and they said, yes, it's in the news, they're doing a film shoot, a movie; of what, by whom, I have no idea. I have to say, a very unusual sight indeed and just one of the visual delights that I experience almost everyday around here.

Must view in X2

I came across this old 1960's era VW Combi the other morning near Van Riebeeck Park, at the top of the city bowl, just beneath Table Mountain. It reminded me of the VW Poptop, though it's not quite a poptop, that played such a prominent role in James Mitchener's epic novel, The Drifters, which I read in my early youth and enjoyed so much and still rate as one of the most magnificent novels I've ever read.

In truth these vehicles which became so associated with the Hippy Culture of the late 60's and early 70's, were from before my era but in later years we still saw a few of them, many bedecked in peace symbols and other protest artwork. What was this one doing there, and were there people living in it, probably, I didn't stay around long enough to find out. Hopped on my horse again and skipped town, but I thought it a wonderfully colourful and vibrant image and just another nostalgic reminder to us of times that we'll never see again!

Video: Medicine Jar performed by Paul McCartney and Wings.

The song, an anti drug opus was written by Scottish lead guitarist Jimmy McCulloch, who joined Wings in April 1974.

McCulloch died from a heroin overdose in 1979 in his flat in Maida Vale, West London. He was 26.
