SmugMug > keywords > drydocks > From the mid 1970s until 1986 a new ship repair and conversion company, ClydeDock Engineering Ltd, utilised the three Clyde Port graving docks (drydocks) at Govan succeeding the firm of Alexander Stephen (Shiprepairers) Ltd that had operated from the late 1960s until 1976.

ClydeDock attracted a significant amount of business in this period following the closure of the substantial shiprepairing businesses of Stephens and Barclay Curle, the latter at the three Elderslie Drydocks in Yoker. In the early 1980s up to nine vessels could be under repair, maintenance or conversion at one time. As well as the Drydocks, ClydeDock utilised berths at No 83 and No 85 Plantation Quay, No 31 Princes Dock, Yorkhill Quay and Basin and the former Harland & Wolff Govan shipyard fitting out basin.

This vessel, the Sealink Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire ferry St Columba, was a regular visitor in winter for annual overhaul. In this view she is in the large No 3 drydock. She was noted as having made an entire traverse of the River Clyde between Glasgow and Greenock (ca 20 miles) going astern on one occasion.
