SmugMug > keywords > escalante > Sunset Arch at sunset. Grand Staircase, Utah. This is not like the arches you find around Moab. This one has no official parking area/ trail head and no real trail. You drive until you see the arch in the distance, pull over and trek out into the desert for a mile until you reach the arch. All the while hoping you took good bearings when you left your vehicle because the arch is out of sight for most of the hike down to it. The best light happens early here as the sun falls below the straight cliffs to the west well before sunset. This light is reflected from the clouds rolling in from the west. The arch and sky seemed to take on a "glow" at dusk that lasted about thirty minutes allowing plenty of time to shoot many different angles of the arch and the sea of petrified sand dunes surrounding it.

SmugMug > keywords > escalante > "Spooky Slot Canyon". An incredibly narrow slot canyon and one of the most challenging subjects I have ever photographed. The canyon walls were around 20"wide and that was considered a spacious passageway. Grand Staircase National Monument, UT.
