After clearing the Canal, ships have to make a turn to port before continuing into the harbor. The Gott is making that turn in the photo. Clouds of frost smoke erupt from open water in her wake.

These 1000 foot lake boats were designed to fit the Poe Lock at the Soo. They are massive, powerful, and slightly less pretty than a cement block. But when they loom out of frost smoke, they're very impressive and even mysterious.

The locks at Sault Saint Marie, Michigan and Ontario, closed for the season on Thursday, January 15. The Edgar B. Speer and Edwin H. Gott were the last Lakers to arrive in Duluth for winter lay-up on Friday, January 16, 2009. They had quite a fight with ice and arrived better than two days late.
