SmugMug > keywords > gene wild > The 27 acre Leo Carillo Ranch Historic Park is not, technically, in Amerca's Finest City. It is,however, in San Diego County and is just another part of what makes San Diego the place it is. The park,near Carlsbad,  is what remains of a 2,533 acre ranch once owned by actor and California Promoter Leo Carrillo. Those of you in my generation might remember Leo as Pancho in the 1950's television series The Cisco Kid.

A small plaque on the statues base has this quote from Ann Morrow Lindberg that captures the setting well: "The waves echo behind me/Patience-Faith-Openness/ is what the sea has to teach."

She was a scientist,horticulturist and nursery woman who is responsible for much of the greenery that makes San Diego what it is today. This statue by Ruth Hayward is in Balboa Park at the southwest end of Cabrillo Bridge.
